Yes good people, The Zanzibar in New Jersey is a highly inspirational space, alot of that is down to the resident DJ Mr Tony Humphries [ he spins there most Fridays & Sats]. To witness him spin on his own turf, he is highly soulful in the mix, which can be different to when he plays over here.

He is a very credible musical presenter with his roots steeped in Black Music, I can honestly say Tony at the Zanzibar, you definitely would not be disappointed, but unfortunately the Zanzibar closed in 1996. Sorry but the club doesn't exist anymore

Regards

Another quality music short, this time highlighting the New Jersey Sound.

Enjoy!!

Good stuff indeed although one could argue that the "true" New Jersey Sound was in fact Sylvia and Joe Robinson's All Platinum/Stang/Turbo outfit of the 60's and 70's with all those classic sounds from the Moments , Whatnauts, Willie and the Mighty Magnificents etc !

We must have frequented the same places mate!!

Ooh woudn't say the Gardening Club was less soulful, Chris the Rythm Doctor and Evil Olive like a groove certainly but they always had lots of the soulful stuff, one of my favorite clubs ever that.

Venus slightly different, not bad music (except when Jeremy T**T Healy was on) but less of the soulful stuff I agree, and more of the hairy transvestites, very offputting when you are trying to gurn freely!!

Remember Tony Humphries opening night at MOS when he moved here, played about 9 hours, real across the board of black music (well no Northern but I forgave him) absolutely awesome, shame he was playing crap prog house by the time he went home.

Great memories!!

Ooh Jock!! I remember Jeremy Healy there very well, fire eaters and all sorts.... on the back of a very hard bank holiday weekend I think, not a healthy combination wacko.gif

Thats right and Elton the biggest tranny ever with the hairiest legs ever, what a weekend!! I did dance to Relight My Fire but not to Smells Like Teen Spirit!!

How are you, are you at Cleethorpes at weekend?

Great film of the great Mr Humphries. Thanks for that :wicked:

Venus was a regular haunt of mine early 90s, along with others off the scene: Kerso, Pepsi, Phill Worrel, Kev Kelly, Jocko, Mick Cullen amongst others

Yes Jocko

Great memories, I've played with (Chris) The Rhythm Doc a number of times. 2 or 3 times at 'Raw' when it was at the YMCA in Tottenham Court Rd, then later in Tallin-Estonia, which is where Chris lives. He married Estonia's top fashion designer.

Also do you remember when DJ Harvey brought Larry Levan to 'The Gardening Club' in 1988?, unfortunately Larry passed on 4 years later age 38.

I used to love that club. Wasn't the night called Feel Real? Also got a couple of early rythym doctor 12"s somwhere...... one with a picture of a boot on and one with a flower on it. Not soul, but great records from a grest time. I'll shall have to dig them out................ smile.gif

Fantastic Bob. thsnks a lot. It's ironic that THIS was the real Garage sound & not what was being played over at King Street. The true garage sound was being made in New Jersey By Tiny Humphries, Paul Simpson, Smack, etc etc. happy days man, happy days.
