Guest rachel Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 (edited) Right, since this seems to divide opinion so violently, I thought we'd have a poll - result by Friday morning will decide once and for all if this is a wonderful record or if Pete is justified in his destructive tendencies... Peter99 Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Me too - and voted! Why do I get the feeling that whatever the outcome of the poll Pete will ne'r gi up his crusade.
SteveM Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Right, since this seems to divide opinion so violently, I thought we'd have a poll - result by Friday morning will decide once and for all if this is a wonderful record or if Pete is justified in his destructive tendencies... I'm woried about tactical voting Rachel. We all know that "I'm Pete Smith" can only possibly garner 2 votes on here. So watch out for shenanaigins !
Guest the dukester Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Dont matter what the people say........ I Like it.......so does my missus.

So watch out for shenanaigins ! Hmm, yes. I did think about adding options for "No, I'm Pete Smith", and "I'm Pete Smith and so is my wife".... Incidentally, I think I've covered most variations of feeling towards the record but if anyone would like a different option added, do let me know.
Guest martyn Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Dont matter what the people say........ I Like it.......so does my missus. I like it too.........But then again I like most Northern Soul

I got one "As shite as Pete Smith's TK Maxx trainers"
Guest in town Mikey Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Hopefully the Cleethorpes DJs on here havent been reading the threads. I like it, but woud hate to hear it 25 times over the weekend.
Guest soul_hull Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 i voted take it or leave it, and i love modern as much as sixties. i also am indifferent towards frank wilson.
Guest moggy Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 I"M SPARTACUS Pete before you have a rush of blood to the head, can you please contact me first, should you decide this fate with another copy of this very nice record i would gladly give you a crisp £5 note and then advertise it on ebay for people to smash

Val (Chunky) Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 can someone post a clip ? .......I don't think I know it
Pete S Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Rachel I think you should close this poll and start a new one because everyone is obviously going to vote for the I'm Pete Smith choice because a) they admire my impeccable taste in music and they are jealous of my good looks and hairstyle
Guest Jamie Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Rachel I think you should close this poll and start a new one because everyone is obviously going to vote for the I'm Pete Smith choice because a) they admire my impeccable taste in music and B ) they are jealous of my good looks and no compromise sports/action footwear Dunno about option B, mate. They're a bit too cutting edge for me.
Pete S Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Dunno about option B, mate. They're a bit too cutting edge for me. Hold up, I'm missing something about the footwear here, is this because I was wearing a pair of cheap trainers about 18 months ago I would refer you to try and find a post called The Curse Of The Chandlers and you will discover why I was not wearing my usual everyday footwear

The Curse Of The Chandlers https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=26267 Seven Pete Smiths so far.. what a disturbing thought...
SteveM Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 Ahhh, I think every so often we all need a dose of... The Curse Of The Chandlers https://www.soul-source.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=26267 Quality ! Better than Hemingways "Old Man and the Sea" (Mind you, I couldn't take to the hero. A bit one dimensional. )
Pete S Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 You don't have to justify them to me, Pete I'm sure they're lovely and you look great in them I bought a pair of white Evisu trainers a couple of years ago and when she saw them, my Mum said they looked 'gay' my own Mum giving me advice on what to wear!
Pete S Posted June 5, 2007 Posted June 5, 2007 111 votes at the time of writing that, 49 of those did not vote for the "I like it" option so I'm not on my own here

Russ Vickers Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 Its a great record..............having suffered from being thrashed to death, wouldnt bother me if I never heard it at a venue again, but you cant deny a quality record...............listen to it, close your eyes & imagine you are hearing this for the first time ever..........would you dance, I know I would, if it was discovered today it would still be a monster, but then its not just about the record is it, its about what it stands for, its the sound that epitomises the more modern sounding records, with slicker recording techniques & a smoother less raw quality that were to become part of the scenes rich diversity..............some of us embraced the sound & excepted it along with the more traditional tunes, others hated it. Russ
Guest Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 (edited) It took a few years before I 'got' this record. I think it was once when I heard it out loud in a club that I realised how good it was. Played out, and then some, but still a good record. It is much better than Lil Major Williams (which is a nice record, don't get me wrong) and if both were discovered today I think we all know which record would have been most wanted. Ironically it sounds right for today I think, considering the many old but currently en vogue slightly funky 70's movers like Ike Strong, Nicky Newarkers, etc. If only it wasn't so played out, or if only it had been played on the 'deep funk scene' first, or if at least it had been revived in such a context, or something like that, then it would be a monster. I actually bought my WDJ copy quite a few years ago from Pete Smith. Thanks a lot Pete. Edited June 6, 2007 by Guest
Rich Buckley Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 13 Pete Smiths Should be an extra option "No, I'm Spartacus" (with a dodgy west midlands accent sound clip ) Rich

Agree I hate to be nostalgic but I still like this record as it reminds me of being 14 and buying the Casino Classics Volume 2 from Vibes in Bury-it's on that with Eloise Laws and the Showstoppers I think.

Guest mel brat Posted June 6, 2007 Posted June 6, 2007 (edited) Channel Four Film: reviewed by Mel-vin Brat CARSTAIRS-PLAY Based on the Book "GOODBYE TO BORIN' (oldies)" by Christopher Isherwood A harrowing tale of blind intolerance and grossly bad taste set against the backdropping antics of the German Vee-Jay Republic of 1919-1933. The film is set around a North Berlin Soul club, where self-absorbed Silly Bowlegs persues her career as a All-Night Cabaret DJ, seemingly unaware of the growing mayhem encroaching on her lifestyle. The hyper-inflation of rare-Soul prices, and mass unemployment in record pressing plants creates an climate where extremism thrives. Anything seen as remotely "Modern" is anethema to a small-minded group of brainless neo-fascists in baggy trousers who rampage around "pretending" to smash up any record that doesn't fit the definitions of 'das Uber-Northern', as laid down by their delusional, self-proclaimed "Fuerer" in his semi-literate booklet 'Mein Kopf Hurts, Duhh!' The film's poignant theme song perfectly evokes the sultry, emotion-charged atmosphere of the Vee-Jay Republic, as the whole scene slides (with the aid of copius amounts of talc!), inexorably toward mind numbing banality, and a new dark age threatens to submerge all that is even remotely soulful and replace it with "rare" uptempo pop tunes and jack-bootlegs... Just as I thought - only someone as bent as a nine-bob note could come up with such a "Gay" retort. You persona is obviously the result of an overbearing Mother and an ineffectual Father. p.s.
