The problems with articles like this, which are mostly heavily edited before publication, is that it would appear that "Northern Soul" is basically the B sides of pop records.

I did hear a description once that NS was soul records sung by white people!

Soul provider article..

Not a bad piece by Natalie Graham. Though I fancy she's re-typed everything Steve Snow gave her. Great plug for raresoulman.co.uk .. The Sun widest read national daily by a country mile.

"The constant search for new sounds can throw up some unlikely artists. Steve paid about £10 for an early Dolly Parton record, Busy Signal."

can anyone explain to me what the above sentence is doing in an article about how rare soul records can be worth a lot of money?

Because to Soulies paying £10 for a 40 year old slab of vinyl is thrifty.

To the rest of the world it is extravagance in the extreme.

Paying $6101 for a VG+er on ebay is Floor king insanity.

The photo makes me look 30 older........but it's the ginger hair I really object to

Natalie contacted me through a mutual friend to ask if I minded doing an interview - needless to say, a one hour interview over the phone got chopped up and a lot of the decent stuff (from our perspective) got edited out.

I didn't imagine they were ever going to use it - I spoke to Natalie about six months ago.

Having read it, I kind of wish I hadn't bothered my arse.

Well at least she didn't go on about you thieving from the dead whilst pissing over old bill and put it all under the headline "THE TRUTH".

I had to do an over the phone interview with the News Of The World, 'Economics' editor.

He wanted me to explain how inflation worked.

I explained and we discussed the perception versus the reality.

The doughnut got it all wrong, but thankfully, rather than quote me or credit the ONS, he said it was all his own work. :P

We were all discussing your age at work today, could'nt believe you were 37...we thought there'd been a typing error!!!! Sorry Steve, I will explain to the lads tomorrow I promise ok.

I thought it was ok, I quite like the Dolly Parton tune myself.

I think the article mentioned those mainstream artists because those are the only ones 'the great unwashed' have heard of (from a UK perspective anyway).

One guy at work is a massive Helen Shapiro fan and was amazed at her name being mentioned!

Is the bit about 800 records worth £10,000 correct? that would average £12:50p per record! Gotta be more than that, I would think?

It was a good article, but less on the actually obscure artists who have made the music. not like they have researched and said Ruby Andrews, Moses Smith, Dean Parrish, Fascinations etc have been mentioned as some rare soul records, they did say about some rare motown on other labels.

also suprised it was a younger soulie then say a typical 50 year old

If mentions got royalties , Frank Wilson would be a millionaire ......

What part of it was good?

Agreed Ken, worse part is I bought the toilet roll substitute to see it.

Sorry Steve, sure you are a nice guy but wtf were you thinking. Faux Wigan polo shirt and assume a non authentic Frank Wilson? What point exactly were you making. It sure as hell sums up big parts of the scene (or the 200 scenes I should say) today for me.

Makes Miranda Sawyers comments seem more than a little irrelevant I would suggest

Lets re-open the debate on whether media coverage is good and see if we get the same responses

I am a nice guy as it goes, but the guy in the picture was Russ Winstanley, not me.....you'll have to ask him about the authenticity of his shirt and Frank Wilson 45

Don't blame me. Content of the piece was soul related hence the move. Thems the rules..

any credibility the scene did have to outsiders went out of the window with the mention of some pillocks paying up to £100 for a Dolly Parton record :wicked: Jesus wept!!!!

There's 1000's of better examples to give to the media, proper soul records, to get the point of prices and northern soul over to the public without mentioning a shite pop record that has practically nothing to do with northern soul or soul

Unfortuantely the result of this article will be that anyone who has any soul records kicking around will now think they are ALL worth money. :wicked:

Boot sales will be interesting in the next few weeks.

Why do people do interviews like this? Can't see what purpose it serves at all.

Sigh. The piece in the paper was about 'northern soul'. It was posted in the Freebasing section. Freebasing is a place for non soul related discussion. That's why it was moved here. Personally I care not a jot what is printed in the Sun as it's not a newspaper I read.
