Was "If you ask me" given an ever so slightly different mix for it's Disco Demand release? I can't do an A/B comparison right now, but I feel sure that the girlie b/v's had a more spacey feel on my Calla copy...

Could be my mind playing tricks though.

How rare did the Chip Tyler version turn out to be?

Not heard it for many, many years and would like to give it a listen again.

How I understood it was the original and the disco demand one are the same but the 73 Calla one was differnt.. label looks the same but has 1973 at the bottom..

Maybe wrong

id go with that too MISCHIEF and also the break was different too the strings.

Why try re-nameing it Chip Tyler?.... Or was he just re-inventing again

On a similar subject,why doesnt The Fuzz on Disco Demands sound the same as the original (echo'y end)?..............& how come my copy is on Roulette not Calla?

i have this on spanish EXIT

believed to have been discovered on this label a good 2 years before the calla copies showed up

i have not checked but have been told its a bit longer as well

Chip Tyler is a totally different record - I know this because I actually asked Jerry Williams if it was a real person and he said it was...this was on KTF must be 6 or 7 years ago, Jerry used to be on there all the time, still pops up now and again

Yet another sound that came out of Gloucester,can you believe first time it was played at the Torch it was taken off cause it was too slow!it was probably one of the first sounds to become popular through the"Wax Machine"tapes,i remember people used to travel to soul nights in the area just to hear it!

What a healthy scene there was in Gloucester at that time. I remember The Wax Machine very well. The Soul Packs were great value. Bought some great records from there around '73. Still got a UK CBS Patti Austin demo(Are we ready etc) - it was in the rack at 50 pence.

I've just dug that Chip Tyler record out to have a listen and it is absolutely bloody awful! And I haven't even had my breakfast yet.

If it's someone else though why do they have the same b-side? Albeit one of the versions is just 'Yvonne' and the other is 'I love you Yvonne'

The difference I remember between the original and the '73 reissue was that on the original at the break went straight into the string section, but the reissue had a longer break before the strings. The original mix appears on the Wigan Casino story vol 1(Why, it was pre Wigan, and reissued before the Casino opened?)

Correctamundo Paul - a couple of extra bars that were edited out before the original Calla issue (and the Exit one as well I expect, though I can't remember it. Pete F, I'll have to stagger round to the shop one day and check!)

And before anyone else says it, the easy way to check a Calla second issue without listening is that it has the 1973 reissue date on the label, and that there were two different first issue demos, a plain one and the normal red/white design.

I was listening to an old interview with Jerry on Richard Searling show , last week ,and Jerry explained that the Chip Tyler version has the same backing as his , and that Chip Tylers label simply leased the backing tracks from Calla .I understand that the disco demand version of " If you ask me " was dubbed from disc , and that the original is slightly longer than the 1973 version .Hope this helps !! The 'other version' I heard last March was good. About 200 would be soul singers backing Jerry when he sang it live in the cocktail bar at the Wilshire Grand hotel LA. Swamp Dog rules OK.

This is the one I've got. Bell Sound stamped. Are all the second issues like this?
