Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Afternoon, all, I'm working on a Johnny Guitar Watson project for Kent at the moment, based around JGW's recordings from 1959-65 and including repertoire from Class, Arvee, Escort, King, Highland, Magnum, Jowat and possibly a few other labels I've temporarily forgotten. We've licensed the following records from Johnny's estate, but they don't have sources of good enough quality to make dubs from (and, unfortunately, the master tapes vanished years ago...): Magnum 706 - Big Bad World (+flip) Escort 106 - Looking Back (+ flip) Jowat 118 - Ain't Gonna Move (+ flip) We have tapes for everything else that's on the CD I know that there are a couple of 'big money' records in there, but if anyone has any or all of them and feels that they might be inclined to lend any or all of them to Ace for a short time and for the usual fee of a very generous quantity of CDs, please could they PM me and we'll take it from there. You've been very helpful to Ady and me on many previous occasions, and I'm hoping this time will be no different! Will await your further word... Cheers TONE

Guest Stuart T Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Magnum 706 - Big Bad World (+flip) Is this Magnum 726 Big Bad Wolf or something with a confusingly similar title on 706?
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 Is this Magnum 726 Big Bad Wolf or something with a confusingly similar title on 706? Hi Stuart, Sorry, yes, it's meant to be 726. Must stop typing with those bananas and see how I get on with fingers instead. $64K question is, do you have it, then? TONE

TONE Tony, I'm pretty sure Johnny Beggs from Stoke had the 'Big Bad Wolf' 45 but it was sometime ago, he may still have it, pretty sure one or two will have it on here? Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Regards - Mark Bicknell. Just a thought Tony 'Mace' also from Stoke may have this record certainly the type of thing he collectors and i'm sure he will know if Johnny Beggs still has it certainly worth a go mate. Also Joe Dutton AKA 'Pikeys Dog' may be able to point you in the right direction. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Just PM'd you about your Jowat and I hope Joe and Mace, who has been extremely helpful to me recently, will read this post at some point. Funny, it's looking like the record that should be the easiest to get ("Looking Back") night turn out to be the hardest! Thanks again, TONE
pikeys dog Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I don't have a copy of Big Bad Wolf - but it is very common fro such an expensive record - have you tried someone like Nieve Lynch in London? "Looking Back" - strangely elusive... been after one for at least ten years and never managed to pick one up. Is "Ain't Gonna Move" the same cut as on the Watson & Williams LP?

Thanks again, TONE Tony, got the message from you and have sent reply, will package up Jowat 45 and send to you at Ace tomorrow consider it done, i'm pretty sure Mace, Joe, Johnny etc. will be able to help you with the others. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
Mark Bicknell Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I was gonna mention the 'Williams and Watson' LP too, good point Joe, i think the cut is the same on 'Ain't Gonna Move' but will check it now or rather best you check it Tony....lol but i think it's the same. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Regards - Mark Bicknell. The flip's not on the album (or any other JGW album) and I need that too - and of course the label scans - so the deal's still on, even if it is the same cut! TONE

I don't know Ms. Lynch, but hopefully Stuart will be able to sort me out. I do actually have a copy of 'Looking Back' but its prior place of residence was on a Jamaican sound system so, naturally, its label credits are scratched out, while the vinyl resembles one of Black & Decker's sanding discs. As you say, it's elusive - I've never been able to upgrade it and I've had it around 30 years. But here's hoping someone will come to my rescue today! TONE

Guest Stuart T Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 I don't have a copy of Big Bad Wolf - but it is very common fro such an expensive record - have you tried someone like Nieve Lynch in London? Is that really correct? Looked on Popsike and they had only one from 2004 at a quite reasonable price in the high £200s. I bought mine about 8 or 9 years ago and don't remember seeing many others subsequently. Used to get asked to sell it fairly often in the early 2000s. I got the impression that it wasn't that easy to find?
Guest Stuart T Posted May 16, 2007 Posted May 16, 2007 ..If it's no trouble, guv... Ta TONY Okay, I'll have a look for it tonight and check the condition.
Sebastian Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 (edited) Let me know if you still need MAGNUM 706. My copy is EX+ and very close to M-. Probably only ever played 5-10 times. In my experience it's not a common 45 at all. Edited May 17, 2007 by Sebastian
timthemod Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 (edited) Hi Tony I know of a couple of possibles, people that have copies of Looking Back, one is a friend in San Diego and maybe Lee Miller (UK mod dj) who lives in Leeds. I've txt'd Lee and will let you know when he responds. I do have an MP3 of Looking Back (I think) but it's on my PC at home so I'll post it up here, can't remember what the quality is like? This is my number one what and it really difficult to find, never seen a copy on ebay! Tim Edited May 17, 2007 by timthemod
Guest TONY ROUNCE Posted May 17, 2007 Posted May 17, 2007 Hi all, Sorry, should have posted earlier to confirm - as I am doing now - that thanks to Mark B, Stuart T (probably, or if not Sebastian, please!) and a heavyweight blues collector mate of mine who's not on here, I'm now sorted for all three of these singles. Thanks to all who offered help, you're all tops in Kent's and my book! It's going to be a great CD... TONE
