Ernie Andrews Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 That Magnificent 7 record is bloody brilliant - that was cheap as well I reckon link Pete its white and very poppy but actually quite likeable What do you think of their other stuff
Pete S Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Pete its white and very poppy but actually quite likeable What do you think of their other stuff link White? You have got to be having a laugh. Have you heard it?
Guest Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 Maybe he is confusing the Magnificent 7 (great movie BTW) with the Magnificent Men, who are indeed white, poppy and popular.
Headsy Posted June 22, 2005 Author Posted June 22, 2005 Pete its white and very poppy but actually quite likeable What do you think of their other stuff link too much gear mate.......... as black as my poo they are !! just realised why I am getting lots of PMs and e-mails,this list is from January, loads gone or given away to good homes.
Guest remus Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 White? You have got to be having a laugh. Have you heard it? link they are white, seen the LP cover, they are looking over a balcony in a Beatles style pose!, Mark Bicknall has the LP I think?....Knowledgeable eh?
Guest Stuart T Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 they are white, seen the LP cover, they are looking over a balcony in a Beatles style pose!, Mark Bicknall has the LP I think?....Knowledgeable eh? link Whatever colour they are the lead singer sounds like he has a cold. Still like the record though.
Pete S Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 they are white, seen the LP cover, they are looking over a balcony in a Beatles style pose!, Mark Bicknall has the LP I think?....Knowledgeable eh? link No, thats the Magnificent Men
Garethx Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 I think people have got their Magnificent 7s mixed up with their Magnificent Men. The Magnificent 7 never released an album, but I long suspected that their lead vocalist (Archie Himon) was white. Having said that, I've never seen a picture (someone will probably tell me there are loads in the booklet of the Dial CD that Kent released some time back); but the thing that held "Never Will I.." back from being a great record is the truly awful vocal performance of the lead singer.
Guest Posted June 22, 2005 Posted June 22, 2005 I pointed out the confusion earlier, and yet people kept on? Do most forum members also have poor eyesight? I am not so keen on the Magnificent 7 record myself but "truly awful vocal performance"?! It might not be great but no worse than many, many, others that spring to mind. "Knowledgable" That's a good one...
Guest Dan Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 the thing that held "Never Will I.." back from being a great record is the truly awful vocal performance of the lead singer. link bloody hell gareth, use cotton buds with a little warm water it's a different vocal but it's not awful i may be a stubborn kind of fellow but i've got to say this IS a great record IMO
Garethx Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Fellas: I stand by what I said: that vocal is a complete stinker, maybe one of the worst examples of ersatz 'soul' I can think of. The guy's phrasing is so poor that just thinking about it now makes me cringe. I owned this 45 for over twenty years and always liked the feel, tempo and instrumentation, but even as a teenager I loathed the singing. Vic Reeves in "Kinky John Fowler" mode could have done a better job!

Vic Reeves in "Kinky John Fowler" mode could have done a better job! link OK, but have a listen to the Inmates or something like that, the Magnificent 7 is at least 'ersatz', at least an attempt at soul, whereas many, many, other records played on the scene are not any kind of soul by any stretch of the imagination or abuse of terminology. Indeed many proper soul records are inferior in every way, including vocally. Don't get me wrong, I basically agree with you, but if you put things in perspective your judgement seems a bit harsh to me.

I owned this 45 for over twenty years and always liked the feel, tempo and instrumentation, but even as a teenager I loathed the singing. Vic Reeves in "Kinky John Fowler" mode could have done a better job! link Mrs Richards? MRS RICHARDS? Turn it ON, Gareth, or are you trying to save the batteries? It's not the best vocal ever, granted, and he does sound as though he's standing in the need of a packet of Tunes. But there's no way it's a 'complete stinker'...he's just a not-particularly-competent small time vocalist doing his best on (I'm guessing) a one-take budget - a description which fits many northern records to be honest. Mind you, the sentiments expressed in the song are slightly ersatz...my favourite line is when he says 'I can't think of anything offhand I wouldn't do for that girl'. Can't think of anything OFFHAND? Good effort fella. BTW for anyone who doesn't know it here's a clip...you decide!
Garethx Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 The funny thing about this debate is that I think Dave Bupp of the Magnificent Men is actually a really good 'blue-eyed' soul singer. Listen to their "Peace Of Mind", where he turns in a tremendous and entirely credible performance. The guy from the Magnificent 7 is really, really poor by comparison. So, you can see why I object to the Magnificent Men being termed 'poppy' whereas records like "Never Will I" are accepted because we don't definitively know the racial origin of the vocalist. Black, white, whatever; this guy simply cannot sing: in fact his incompetence is comic in proportion. Play the above soundclip to someone who knows nothing of the intricacies of the 'rare soul' scene and I guarantee you they'll bog themselves. I accept that the racial angle is a spurious way of rating records in any case. I prefer to buy records where the singing is far more than functional or merely competent: for me it's got to be exceptional. There are myriad records out there where the vocal talent, even from relative unknowns, is simply sensational. It is these that I prefer to concentrate on. When I can sort out how to work my new ear trumpet, of course.

She's Called A Woman on Eastern - Same group ? same lead Vocalist ? Really really poor ?
Pete S Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 (edited) The group on Eastern are a different group to the one on Dial, but even so, I am also of the opinion that Gareth needs help with his hearing so am thinking of going on a sponsored whinge to help pay for a new hearing aid. What do you mean you thought I was already on one. Magnificent Men were a terrific group as well though. Edited June 23, 2005 by Pete-S

Good album that first Magnificent Men LP, I'll have to go dig it out.
Garethx Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 (edited) Sticking my neck out, I'd say the Magnificent 7 on Dial and Eastern are the same group... seem to remember a couple of common credits on the various records. Edited June 23, 2005 by garethx

Garethx Posted June 23, 2005 Posted June 23, 2005 Think the common credit is (Little) Archie Himon as a writer and possiblly group member.
