Does anyone know anything about a UK release for Marilyn Grimes "Ooo sweet love"? I'm sure I remember Pat Brady writing about it in Echoes in the early 80s, and saying it had been put out on a UK label called something like West 67th Street. I've since found a blank label test pressing with a solid centre which plays "Ooo sweet love", with the matrix no. WSS 101 (which fits with the label name I think I remember - unless memory's playing its old tricks again). Any info?

Marilyn Grimes was issued in uk and us simultaneously.

Ooo Sweet Love on Abraxas label 76 / 77 period.

Production by Donn Marier for Boogie Man productions.

Catalogue no ; 1702 , mine' s a white promo american 45.

Nice mid tempo tune that never really gained mass acceptance.

Got a few spins at The Mecca - quite like it myself - but does have a quite pop/disco aspect to it.

It was re-released in the late 70's /early 80's on West 102nd Street label (or something very similar ) I think Paul Mooney, who comes on here and a guy called Vince Gallagher from Aycliffe owned the rights to it and brought it out on that label. Ive got a few copies somewhere and i'll try and dig em out.

I'm sure Paul will supply all the facts when he see's this thread.

There was only ever 1 release on 102nd street - Marilyn Grimes - and as far as I know only 1000

were pressed. I have 2 copies 1 of which has never been played . I would be willing to sell it, if anybody is interested!

I will dig it out and scan the label.

Why would anyone want to release this ? Surely there was no demand ? As mentioned previously it's a pop/soul record, quite pleasant but more pop than soul imo

I have no idea why it was released in the UK . but it is a nice soul/disco, rather that "pop" song , which could / should still get played . The label is well designed as well

Thanks for the scan - it's interesting that the date on the label is 1980 - I'm sure the US release was earlier. Does anybody want to sell me a UK copy?

I had forgot about that.

West 102nd Street Music Ltd was my old publishing company with a new name after I resigned. I got the masters and copyrights and Vince Gallagher got the company. His dad was our bank manager. Kev Kaine might remember more because I think he replaced me as a director.

Vince issued the record in 1980. I think the pressing plant went into receivership while it was being pressed and everything was locked up for a while. We had pressed records in 1979 with Eddy Grant and his company went bust.

The label was designed by Geoff Marston who also designed Hit & Run and Special Agent.

I'd appreciate a copy if anyone has a spare.

By the way, whatever happened to Vince Gallagher? It's more than twenty years since I heard from him.

Vince Gallagher lives in Sao Paolo, Brazil, he has a brazillian wife and family and is running a successful coffee machine business!!

This was bizarre news to me as well!!, he was in England recently to see his family and he contacted Kev Cane and they went out for a drink and he gave Kev an update.

Vince was a major influence on me musically and introduced me to deep soul, harmony ballads etc when i was a 16 year old casino boy! and also gave me a few records around that time like 4 below zero, Ujima etc, years before they became popular.

I think i can get his email address if you want it Paul, also i have a few copies of the Marilyn Grimes, so if you PM me your details i'll send you a couple of copies. Kev also has a few copies of "Disco Music" by Sir Ted Ford, one of the first issues on your ardent label, which is a fabulous tune and probably quite rare too nowadays (me and Kev have been playing this at Joes bar in Darlington recently)

One thing ive always wondered about the Marilyn Grimes......Why release it when its US issue was fairly easy to get? Surely it was never gonna be a big seller?

The reason why some records were released in the UK without any apparent demand is because there was some potential in those days to create a demand with wider pop and disco audiences - including mainstream clubs and radio etc. Remember that a lot of soul things crossed over and became pop hits.

These days of course things are usually released only because of existing or anticipated specialist demand. The potential for mainstream success is gone.

The notable exceptions are when we get soul songs covered by pop stars or when we get songs placed in movies etc.

Anyway, please say "hello" to Kev for me and it's nice to hear that Vince has done okay. I'll contact you offlist with my address etc.
