Markhopes Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 ======== Yes it did, soul nights every other Monday back in the very early 80s, i myself moved to Leicester three weeks after the Casino's 1st 'final ' niter to attend the local college there,i got to know Phyl, Ali's ex wife and her sister Justine along with Tracy, who always had a different hairstyle every single time we all went to any soul dos together, i think it was one of the few times i actually went around with a group of female soulies Delx hi, was a regular at Oddfellows but use to keep a low profile downstairs in the moderm room, what a great all-nighter. Rob Wigley Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 (edited) Here we go Anyone else still got their membership card ??? Oddfellows had a strict policy that everyone had to have a membership card to get in otherwise you had to fill out a form and queue up for another one. All details were then put into a large ledger type book along with your membership number, which was stamped on the back. Mine was 293. I wonder what happened to that log? It would be a true piece of Norther Soul History if it ever turned up!!!! Love Karen Edited March 18, 2008 by Karen and Rob Wigley
Rob Wigley Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 (edited) And some "Odd fellows" at the Oddfellows These pictures were taken downstairs, very sorry they are poor quality as my scanner is not working. Me and Chris were inseparable until his short break away... say no more!! Then I had the good forture to go around with Trina and Steve, Mark Goerge, Mark Oliver, Edwin, Brickie and Mark Sargant!!!!! thats when the fun really started!!!! Love Karen ps I am on the vidoe, all in black dancing next to Chris!!! more of my feet then anything!!! Edited March 18, 2008 by Karen and Rob Wigley

Guest Posted March 19, 2008 Posted March 19, 2008 Hi all, i remember the oddfellow nighters very well. these were my first allnighters, the venue across the road from St. Maggies bus station, i think it was called The Ballroom, though before that it was a massive furniture shop. I don't remember you needing membership to get into these first nighters, that came when the venue changed. There was just the large room used upstairs at oddfellows first, seem to recall it was like that for a while. Last tune was always Donna King wasn't it? I only missed a couple, so i'd prob know some of you posters by sight. To hear stuff like Steinways, Eddie Bishop, The Fascinations, Detroit Soul (the group) amonst other great records for the first time means Oddfellows will allways be remembered as a top night out for me. 50p bus ride into town and £3.50 (i think?) to get in.Home the next morning, still chewing gum with a new record and change from 20 quid! Happy days! sog

Guest gouldy Posted March 24, 2008 Posted March 24, 2008 The downstairs room always opened later than the main room as they needed to kick out the clubbers and sweep up. It usually started around 1 am and closed at around 7. I dont remember it ever being a modern room solely. One of the lists I ve got of djs on the night (peeled off the wall so I could work out that nights movements) shows Adam, Brian,Robin,Alan Walls, Dave E, Keb and Brian in the doownstairs room. And Brian, Gary Rushbrook,DaveE, Keb, Adam, Tony Clayton,Chris King and Ali upstairs. We expected dj line ups like this everytime...how spoilt were we???????????? I was there that night - came down from Fife with Alan Walls and the Right Track Soul Club Crew. Was a great nite as always and was a great venue ! Remember going back to the REV's house next day and we discovered that he had 1000's of sounds that he never played at nighters and there were some absolute belters among them ! He could have had a playlist that would have shamed the main 6Ts newies guys !

This was my first introduction to the niters, I was 15, in the old 4th year at school. My mum let me go cos the fella whose baby son I used to babysit for used to go to Wigan and he told her there was no alcohol on sale so I'd be fine... I used to go the Saracen's soul nights on a Monday that Ally ran (I think?), where I met Cindy and Anna (who Martyn the jazz mentions). I'm still in touch with Cindy and went to the Cleethorpes weekender and the Rugby soul night with her last year (she lives in Sydney now). What I do remember about the oddfellows was the dancefloor, which was superb, how packed and hot it was on that anniversary night, trying to avoid the cameras for the video and failing at the last but one record... the niter introduced me to lots of records which were new to my ears then, some of which were Wigan oldies, some were new and being played at Stafford, that's why it threw me when I first heard people talking about a 'stafford sound' or some such... it was all new to me then!
