Rufus Lumley - I'm Standing - Stateside.

bought it from Select-a-disc Nottingham for £10

I was earning £12 a week at the time as a gasfitters apprentice..that was the start of the slow slippery slide into Northern soul addiction.

Within a week, my best friend had pushed the middle out, shaped into a plectrum for his guitar. Paul Arnott where are you now?? I've never forgiven you!

SUPERB !!!!!!!!!

NOW THATS WHAT FRIENDS ARE FOR

Got my first TOBI LARK - HAPINESS... For £3-00 in 1972 or 3

from my local electrical store in Bedford which had a record bar/sound booths.

at the time I was earning about a fiver a week on an apprenticeship so had to

pay my mum the board and lodgings the next week.

My local record shop was a big influence on the start of my collectng, they used

to get in imported soul records from Selecta, Contempo, and Global in Manchester

every week to order.WE had a list of about a hundred records you could order.

In those early days I got myself copies of Thelma Lyndsay-Magic City, Jackie Lee

-Darkest Days, Superlatives-Uptite, Vibrations-Epic etc etc.. all originals for 75p each !!

First serious purchase in the mid 70's... an issue of Yvonne Baker of Richard Searling at

the Casino, he only sold it because he knew it had just been Bootlegged, unfortunately

he dropped a clanger as it was the West Coast demo which got bootlegged that was

the copy he kept, he asked if I would swap it back for the issue, no chance I said.

First £100 record I bought was a Demo of Lada Edmund when I got back on the scene

in the early 90's

First £1000 record was the Cashmeres on Hem in 2001 thats when I knew I HAD IT BAD

£2.00 for Rufus Lumley - I'm Standing (Holton orig), seems daft looking at it now but it was a big jump from the 50p to a £1 that boots were costing at the time. I suppose as a kid, with not a lot of money to spare, it was a case of do you by one for £2 or 2/3 boots for £2 .

Can remember me mum & dad saying "£2 for a bloody record ? don't come to me when you have no money left !"

Memories

First one I broke the bank on was a red/white UK demo of "Dr Love" by Bobby Sheen on Capitol. Took me a week to save up the £20 for it 24 years ago!

...and what incredible value you got for your money, Gene, with the phenomenal 'Sweet Sweet Love' on the flip.

Still got my UK issue of this, bought for three shillings and six pence from Basildon market in very early 1967. Can remember buying Jimi Hendrix' "Hey Joe" as a new release on the same day, after seeing him on the last-ever "Ready Steady Go"...

Wigan 1980

Ray Pollard The Drifter Demo £10 Sam Williams Tower Demo £20 both off the same lad = skint for the month.

Remember when I talked Chris Plant into selling his Majestics on Linda Demo, it was around the £18-20 mark, so to get him to sell it I offered him £25 ,bearing in mind this was at the Rotherham allnighter, I had purchased an unknown Tony Middleton track off Tim Ashebenda for £6 called To The end of the earth on MGM issue, its nothing like Paris Blues he said !, anyway we agreed the deal & I would pay him the money on the sunday afternoon at the Birmingham Locarno, I was absoloutly skint, and approached Daddy for the said amount, f****n twenty quid, what for, mmmmmmmm a record, a f****n record, come on pops Ill pay you back over the next two weeks, money in hand, I caught the bus up to Town and my mate Wallie (Dave Wallace) went in and got me the cherised vinyl, 25p left in my pocket and it was back home on the bus, didnt even have the money to go the alldayer, no beer, no fags, for a fuggin fortnight, ahh great memories.

Doug Banks on Argo £30 off Mick Smith in 1988. I was still in school at the time and worked in Kwik Save after school on a thursday and friday and all day saturday. Was over a week's wages. Vividly remember being up the ladder in work stocking some shelves and thinking "what have I done - work like a dog and then spunk all the cash in one go on a 7" piece of 20 year old vinyl and have feck all left to go out on".

I obviously didn't learn my lesson as within 12 months I'd bought Timi Yuro off Mick for £120 on UK Liberty and Freddie houston - If I Had Known for a ton. In fact, Mick probably had most of my kwik save wages in them 2 years!! Happy days

Most i've ever paid for a record to keep for my personal collection was recently,

£28.33 for 12" Bobby Cash Redd "Skate Party Pople" 1983

Thankfully buying many collections over the years and doing serious hunting in many cramped and / or dirty spaces, has enabled me to find most things for low prices.

darrow fletcher, pain gets a little deeper....about £15 from YankS in Manchester in the mid to late 80S-it was a lot then!

The first record I paid over £100 for was Tobi Lark "Happiness is here" (Topper) - won it on E-Bay about 5 years ago and crapped myself after, wondering how I was going to pay for it!!

Does anyone else go through the whole emotional range when finding records; the exhiluration on finding it, the guilt about spending money on a piece of plastic, the pleasure when putting the needle on the record, etc, etc, etc.!!

LOL.. know EXACTLY what you mean! on both comments... I've done this many times, stupidly all the records I've chased and found I then gave away as gifts.. The determination that I was going to find a particular record, the buzz when you find it, the nerves when your chasing it, the satisfaction and buss when you get it then you ask yourself why are you spending so much money on this one record?, why is it so important to own it on this bloody label!!. I think it's deffo a better feeling when its for someone else.. (maybe this is a selfless female thing! LOL )

I had a 5year chase on one record which was more than a months wage! I couldnt believe it when I found one for sale..and when I won it, bloody hell I nearly cried!..my heart was literally racing!. It was like winning the lottery. But then I couldn't believe I was really gonna pay so much for a 7 inch piece of vinyl that wouldn't even be mine!.. I put it down as temporary insanity!.

I remember I'd been after The Diplomats - cards on the table and I was bidding on two auctions. A demo on one and an issue on the other... stupid girl managed to win both of them!... (Mr Bicknell may remember this!). The stunned silence when they were produced at home was second to none!..well, maybe to one... whistling.gif

First record I paid a decent amount for was probably Michael and Raymond WD for £40 at the Chapel Allnighter in Rotherham.

First £100 record was The Tan Geers "What's The Use Of Me Trying" Okeh issue, March 1995.
