Pete S Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 ===== did they actually play this tune at wigan and who actually danced to it ??? come on guys own up? but lets face it,,it was popular in the youth clubs... I remember this coming out and of course none of us had ever heard (or even knew there was) the original, so it's playing at our youth club disco and this guy came in, never knew who he was, gave a record to the dj and lo and behold it was The Invitations version (on Our Of The Past of course) and I honestly couldn't believe it and can still to this day remember thinking how NORTHERN it sounded, the same thing happened with, of all things, Going To A GoGo by The Sharonettes, at 14 I hadn't heard the Miracles version but when I did I nearly dropped dead on the spot, OH MY GOD what a difference, those kettle drums at the start and the guitar riff and the slightly off backing vocals, the rumbling bass. Isn't it wierd that nearly 35 years on you can still remember the first time you heard a record and what effect it had on you.
Modernsoulsucks Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 "Going to a Go-Go" still does that to me after all these years. ROD
Pete S Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 "Going to a Go-Go" still does that to me after all these years. ROD Me too. Life changing experience for me.
Pete Eccles Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 Me too. Life changing experience for me. Pete, Iwalked in a town centre youth club at 14, and the first 2 tunes i heard were the isleys - tell me its just a rumour and the miracles - going to a go-go, saw these lads dancin, never heard or seen anythin like it, the rest is history! didn't play Kenny Rogers or the Cufflinks tho! LOL Pete
Ernie Andrews Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 walked into this dance hall in Walkden called Joe Turners Dance academy- More like alarge garage. Heard this uptempo muisc. Asked what it was and told - its Northern Soul! Next record comes on - I ask what it was the man who runs the academy Joe shows it to me - The dance floor was full when it was playing. I look and ask who was "Alma Cogan" - Joe says -she is a dead 60s singer who covered lots of beatles records. OH Whats this one? "Its You" he replied - I loved it and I am still after a Red and white demo if anyone has it- Still think the record is absolutely brilliant!
Guest mel brat Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 (edited) ===== but lets face it,,it was popular in the youth clubs... NOT when I was a F****** youth it wasn't!!! (Thank God!) Edited April 26, 2007 by mel brat
Wiganer1 Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 NOT when I was a F****** youth it wasn't!!! (Thank God!) ======= gather it wasnt a mecca spin this time then mel??
Guest Hunnymon Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 I quite liked their versions of "superlove" and "ten miles high"
Guest MBarrett Posted April 26, 2007 Posted April 26, 2007 Hunnymon Have a CD here with both those tracks on it and I like them both. If we can like them AND all of what the purists like that HAS to make us the winners doesn't it??!! Or have I missed something??!! Come on let's have some more of you out of the closet. You know you'll feel better for it!! MB
Guest mel brat Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 (edited) ======= gather it wasnt a mecca spin this time then mel?? No. The Mecca was mainly a Soul venue. We used Wigan's Ovation records as beermats. Edited April 30, 2007 by mel brat

Isn't it wierd that nearly 35 years on you can still remember the first time you heard a record and what effect it had on you. Interesting Pete your comments about the "sound" of the Miracles "Going To A Go Go" , that is, the off vocals and distorting bass etc I love it as much as the next person, but I always thought the mix of the hit recording was so "muddy" , "muffled" even. I'm sure many would say that is what makes it great but I've always been hoping that some day, someone would clean the mix up, so to speak. I would say exactly the same thing with respect to Martha and the Vandellas' Dancing In The Street which also sounds so muddy !!! Funny that, all the other Hunter - Stevenson Motown productions around at that time were absolutely crystal clear !!!
