I remember this coming out and of course none of us had ever heard (or even knew there was) the original, so it's playing at our youth club disco and this guy came in, never knew who he was, gave a record to the dj and lo and behold it was The Invitations version (on Our Of The Past of course) and I honestly couldn't believe it and can still to this day remember thinking how NORTHERN it sounded, the same thing happened with, of all things, Going To A GoGo by The Sharonettes, at 14 I hadn't heard the Miracles version but when I did I nearly dropped dead on the spot, OH MY GOD what a difference, those kettle drums at the start and the guitar riff and the slightly off backing vocals, the rumbling bass. Pete, Iwalked in a town centre youth club at 14, and the first 2 tunes i heard were the isleys - tell me its just a rumour and the miracles - going to a go-go, saw these lads dancin, never heard or seen anythin like it, the rest is history! didn't play Kenny Rogers or the Cufflinks tho! Asked what it was and told - its Northern Soul! Next record comes on - I ask what it was the man who runs the academy Joe shows it to me - The dance floor was full when it was playing. I look and ask who was "Alma Cogan" - Joe says -she is a dead 60s singer who covered lots of beatles records. OH Whats this one? "Its You" he replied - I loved it and I am still after a Red and white demo if anyone has it- Still think the record is absolutely brilliant! Interesting Pete your comments about the "sound" of the Miracles "Going To A Go Go" , that is, the off vocals and distorting bass etc I love it as much as the next person, but I always thought the mix of the hit recording was so "muddy" , "muffled" even. I'm sure many would say that is what makes it great but I've always been hoping that some day, someone would clean the mix up, so to speak. I would say exactly the same thing with respect to Martha and the Vandellas' Dancing In The Street which also sounds so muddy !!!
