macca
come on guys. let's keep on topic! there's absolutely no point fretting over whether the exploitative nature of camels falls in line with the editorial slant of the UK's 2nd tabloid. we all know what a compassionate, tolerant rag it is. I'm also relieved to know they have a black gossip columnist. highly commendable. Link to comment Social source share
Guest MBarrett
Macca Just for my interest do you give the DM any credit for the stance that they took over the Stephen Lawrence murder case. They blasted the faces of the accused across the front page with the headline "Murderers". They risked a massive legal suit but put morality and justice first. For me one of the most audacious and courageous pieces of journalism of recent times. Didn't notice any of the other newspapers showing similar backbone or shall we call it good old fashioned "bottle." Just wondering??!! MB Link to comment Social source share

I'm also relieved to know they have a black gossip columnist. highly commendable. I apologise for posting the camel story, I was simply trying to point out how balanced the paper is these days. Back on topic, its a perfectly good thread imo. People offered opinions etc.I would imagine the readership as a whole would be pretty ambivalent to any soul scene, ( as would most tabloids target audience) unless of course they were hit with the headline "Northern soul will bring down the price of your house", which will cause a few missives to the editor. MBarret, its often easy to read other members posts as more agressive/intolerant than the are meant, and its easy to react accordingly. I think most of us have done it. Please bear that in mind and keep posting. Particularly interesting are the political debates in which the tree huggers continually battle with those of us they believe are from the dark side (the t-h's talk cr*p most of the time, but we enjoy it ). So join in, and you'll get to see the quirky posting styles that some of us have. Steve. (Mind you, none of us slightly right of centre have ever stuck up for the Daily Mail. You'll have been pigeonholed already for that ) Link to comment Social source share

MB I've just read up on the case (I left the UK in 1991) & as you say, a very audacious & courageous piece of journalism indeed. while I wouldn't consider myself a tree hugger, there are still aspects of the paper's editorial style that I feel uncomfortable with, but credit where it's due, of course. Guest MBarrett
Interesting really that the British Library singled it out as one of the 29 most significant newspaper front pages of the 20th century. Whilst I believe the Guardian said it "might" have been a cynical ploy. Click here MB Link to comment Social source share
macca
yep. they also single out the sun's 'gotcha' headline from the sinking of the belgrano during the falklands war. I bet the guardian had something to say about that too. Link to comment Social source share

They blasted the faces of the accused across the front page with the headline "Murderers". They risked a massive legal suit but put morality and justice first. For me one of the most audacious and courageous pieces of journalism of recent times. Of course. It's the only commendable thing I can remember the Mail ever doing. From what I can recall (and I may be wrong) Stephen's father Neville, was a carpenter or electrician, who'd done some work on the house of the D.M.'s editor and so got to know him slightly. The editor felt strongly about the case because of this personal association. I'm not criticising that, because the intent was honourable. However, it's a shame that the D.M. only feels a need to campaign on something like this when its staff have had some personal connection and is content to spend the rest of its time making sweeping generalisations about people it doesn't know. Anyway, to get back on topic, is Paddy's the only reply so far and what did he say? Link to comment Social source share

Just post it up for christs sakes, otherwise close the thread in my opinion, as we're attempting to have a discussion on something we're all speculating on whilst those who have seen it are commenting on. Mindless! I'm sure it's a fine answer, but bloody well share it with us or close the thread! Rich Link to comment Social source share

Guest MBarrett
I'll leave it to Baz to post up the letter that was printed yesterday. But since it was a natural follow on from Paddy's - as a final contribution to this thread and forum I may as well post that one up too. Then there is a complete picture as it stands so far. Before signing off I have to say again how saddened I was that my original post - which was made with the best of intentions - was pretty much "torn to shreds". Seemed a bit unnecessary. Oh well - c'est la vie! I'm outta here!! Paddy's letter: NORTHERN Soul is the longest Ârunning 'underground' music scene in this country, spanning 35 years. The name Northern Soul was origÂinally coined for the sub-genre by Blues & Soul magazine columnist Dave Godin who wrote an article in the early Seventies about the rare high-tempo Sixties Motown-styled soul sounds being played in the dance halls in the North of England. These venues, particularly in Blackpool, Wigan and Stoke, staged 'all-nighters' where youngsters danced to a beat very different from the funk-orientated, Seventies-style music favoured in the South of EngÂland clubs. The Northern Soul sub-genre has two key elements: it must be upÂtempo Black American dance music from the Sixties and Seventies (more often than not with a Motown flavour) and, most importantly, the song has to be rare - not the sort of thing which has featured in the pop charts in the UK or America. Most of the records that have been commonplace on the Northern Soul scene for many years came to light only due to the commitment of UK collectors and DJs going over to America in the Seventies and finding rare soul records almost hidÂden away by the shop owners who thought no one would be interested in them. Today, Northern Soul continues to flourish with many three-day weekÂenders and all-nighters attracting thousands of people. Long may it continue and, as we say: "Keep The Faith!"
