Guest Bearsy Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 You can put a claim in mate - but lets see some footage!
Billywhizz Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 You were pretty good in your younger days too Billy. Don't know what you're like now... Hello una never good but still doing the rounds 32 years later. Billy
spot Posted April 24, 2007 Posted April 24, 2007 Wouldnt it be good to get all the top dancers in a room together for a dance comp to see who really does come out top dog all those egos in one room !!! Now that would be worth watching! Spot I do understand where the ego thing comes from tho ....blokes tend to have a more competitive streak whe it comes to anything!!! I admire Sam Evans footwork very much ..but I could teach her a thing or two about gymastics those bendy legs on her cart wheels look very messy and her round offs are also untidy But then i gave up the gym routines a long time ago I think i would look very undignified throwing myself about (even tho I still can ) after all Im a laydee and I do laydee things !! PMSL!!! PS I teach gymnastics and trampolining to kids which I love!!! No chance of getting all those male top dancers in one room Mand, one you`d never get the heads through a normal size door also can you imagine the preening & posturing it would be ages before a single step was attempted & finally there`d be that much Testosterone in the room it would bleeding well implode!!! just doesn`t bear thinking about. BET IT`S GREAT TEACHING KIDS GYMNASTICS BUT TRAMPOLINING NO, ONLY BECAUSE THEY WOULDN`T BE ABLE TO GET ME OFF IT. WE`RE ALL JUST BIG KIDS AT HEART. TAKE CARE & BE SAFE (ON THAT TRAMPOLINE) SPOT.

I s'pose you're right about the dancers in one room! As for trampolining We're always safe Spot we're trained by BAGA (Britich amateur gymnastics assoc) All safety procedures followed Its a great way to keep fit! and fun thats why I like to keep having a go ! we're now thinking of running an adult class too Mand
Bjorn Nilsson Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 (edited) Why do some people here imply that all great dancers have a gigantic ego? Is it because they can't dance them selves or something? I have'nt met all these fantastic dancers but the ones I have met have been just as nice and down to Earth as anyone else! Edited April 25, 2007 by Bjorn78

I have'nt met all these fantastic dancers but the ones I have met have been just as nice and down to Earth as anyone else! Bjorn that was a "tongue in cheek" reply to Mandy, you know good old British humour m8. But to be honest a large percentage of top dancers from that bygone era of the 70`s did have over inflated ego`s & thought the floor was theirs by rights, I know I was there to witness it. You must think your a bit good on the old Maple matting to offer such a reply!!!!! (Joking, British humour again, no offence mean`t or intended ) Most people nowadays who are my age are just happy they can shake a leg still, me included. Take care & be safe, Spot.

Guest Posted April 25, 2007 Posted April 25, 2007 HI All, first time post so take it easy with me if I make any c-ck up's. As I never got to Wigan I can only watch the U/Tube videos and imagine what it must have been like to watch the great dancers strutt there stuff and try and out -do the others. I try to get out to soul nights when ever possible as it is the only time you can get on a dance floor and do your own thing without anyone taking the p-ss if you happen to make a wrong move. I dont think I have ever heard anyone take the mickey out of a dancer at a N/Soul venue, says a lot about how great the scene is! As for great dancers I prefer the ones who can shuffle & spin rather than jump & flip but thats because i can still stomp a bit, but unfortunately not as fast as i once could. I think the guy Keb on the hearts of soul site is very good even though he does flip and drop a bit. I think my fave fast one for doing a bit of stomping has to be Time by the late great Edwin Starr.

Madmandy Posted April 26, 2007 Author Posted April 26, 2007 He's a cracking dancer Mand. Really in control when doing acrobatic stuff. He does capoeira too (acrobatic type of matial art) the stuff on BBC2s ads Hasnt anyone got footage we can look at? I love to look at skilled dancers ..they make everything look easy!
Guest whippet Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 I dont think acrobatcis has anything to do with it. There are some very soulful dancers out there who would rather die than do a stunt. There used to be a lad called Ian from Doncaster was one of the best movers I have ever seen and hardly ever did a trick it was all skillfull foot work all in beat. The trouble is lots of these so called acrobats totally loose the plot as they are stunting about.
Guest Bearsy Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 DON'T FORGET LEGENDS ARE SPOSED TO BE PERFECT!!! ive been called a leg end many a time
Guest Posted April 28, 2007 Posted April 28, 2007 I'm the best dancer because I wore a dress and high wedge heels at Cleethorpes last year managing to dance the entire afternoon!
Pat Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 Bit behind the times I know joining this discussion now, almost 2 weeks after everyone else. I love to dance and I also love to watch others out on the dance floor. Sometimes I recognise people by their dancing style. The only time I'm not too keen on gymnastics is when there is limited floor space and we're in grave danger of having our teeth kicked out . My mind might still be 17 as it was in 1969 but the body sometimes has trouble keeping up with the pace. i'll stop for abreather then join back in again. Pat

Pat Its been a while since I posted this story, and its a slow day with boring Arsenil on the box. I went to the Great Yarmouth scooter rally in 1981. We left Dursley at 4am in a convoy of about 100 scooters, picking up another 50 or so in Gloucester. By daybreak we picked another 70-80 in Oxford, and set off across country on the A roads as most of us hadnt passed our tests. We eventually got to Yarmouth about 11pm that evening, after every police force on the way held us up, sent us off in small groups, only for us to meet up again a few miles down the road. Keen to get some dancing in, we went straight into a Mansfield monsters do. I hadnt changed and was wearing a pair of loafers. The place was full of scooter boys and skins, whereas most of our lot were mods. There was no real problem until I decided to do a few acrobatics to Cecil Washington - I dont like to lose. My right shoe flew off, and landed on a table full of drinks belonging to a bunch of extremely nasty looking skinheads. All hell let loose as my mates came to my rescue. It resulted in a few arrests, all skins, and a few in hospital including 2 of my mates. I was fine tho, and even got my shoe back All because I was stupid enough to do acrobatics in shoes with no laces. Lesson learnt tho. Never again!
Guest martinsbox Posted April 29, 2007 Posted April 29, 2007 (edited) Just wondering who we think are the best northern dancers today My choice would be female : Sam Evans or Jo? Cooper? Guest Posted April 30, 2007 Posted April 30, 2007 Its great to see everyone dancing, expecially all the older crowd who must get out of breath after the first fanfare of certain big oldies I prefer the boogie boogie cock rubbie dance in the pulling room Your never too old for that old waltze My head was spinning at the last Prestatyn ...........Even if my body was doing odd stuff..................... Acrobatics? ................... I was on the top bunk bed!

Guest SteveC Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 (edited) Well out of my league nowadays but I am allowed to reminisce and I much rather enjoy admiring my other half's footwork which is faultlessly smooth. It's the ones that dance quietly in the corner not trying to grab attention that you have to admire. Thats defo not me but it is my Carole. Really like the way Debs (I think thats her name) from Notts and Jo from Yorks' dance. As for males - Keb I've always admired and Carl Piper is the king of smooth without any pause between footwork and spin. The big guy from Manch (Paul) must be one of the bet spinners about at the mo however there was a great spinner at Wolverhampton at the Ronnie Walker do who Karl Heard hilariously thought he'd challenge. Although the eloquence may be missing I do love to watch the guys who do the simple repetetive 2 or 3 steps side movement but who can achieve amazing spins too. Not gonna win dance competions (which I personally believe have become a farce with the whole world entering - bit like pop idol auditions) but gr8 to watch a part of our scene. Anyway sure I've posted this up b4 to prove I wasn't always a fat bastard even tho there isn't a pic of me and the lady who won the comp circa 81 didn't have to dance to win. Kaz's father was a black music teacher which shone through in her soulful facial expressions when she danced - still a well deserved winner tho and in all honesty I still believe my home crowd ensured I pipped Keb to 2nd place - sorry m8 Now the following year was a different story and an enthralling tale to say the least which carried on for weeks after the dance comp at St Ivo which once again involved Keb and I but as they say thats another story....... Guest Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 For another I'd like to recall a bloke called Pip who I met at Warrington Parr Hall, he was going out with Cathy Kirby (no, Cathy queen of the go-go from Bradford) ......... he was bloody good. Anyone know him or what became of him? Could've been Pip McDonnell (McDonogh? I only EVER knew him as 'Pip') - a mate of mine going back a long long way to the late 70's. Used to hail from Burtonwood, near Warrington but now somewhere in North Wales (possibly Llandudno area). If we're talking about the same lad, he still pops up from time to time, mainly at all-nighters and always when you least expect to bump into him. A sound lad and still loves his Northern. Neil Jones.
Guest Posted May 2, 2007 Posted May 2, 2007 I know a guy who tells me he was the best. Apparently Paul 'Dicko' Dixon from Aycliffe was the kiddie at Wigan but that was long before my time (1978 ish) so I only have his word for it, though if he was that good does anyone remember him??? I naively entered a few comps 'way back when' and other than Vern & Sandy (only saw him once or twice), one of the best dancers I remember from the time I went to Wigan was Mally from the Rochdale area. Just awesome to watch! It was as if he had four legs and they were all on castors!!! None of yer Olga Korbutt stuff - just fast, beat-perfect, precision dance steps that incorporated every part of his body, not just feet and legs, that left you bewildered! Didnt see him for yonks and a few years ago, spotted this lad in the middle of KGH dance floor in Blackburn. Stood out like the knac*ers on a bulldog for his style and it was him, still going at it like a 17 yr old to "Broadway Sissy" - one of his faves at Wigan - (and still with the same build, the lucky git!!!). Anyone else recall Mally - one helluva dancer!!! Chris Hurley was a superb dancer. Was a regular at Wigan and suddenly went off the radar. Turned out he found his vocation on the dance floor and scooted off to London and trained as a professional dancer. He wound up working in the West End in various stage shows and, for a while, was in Hot Gossip if I remember correctly. Another lad (surname escapes me but Paul 'summat or other') from Warrington area could cut a rug with the best of 'em. Steve Hackney shuffled like there was no tomorrow!! Christ knows where he ended up. He bought Russ Redferns Lambretta not long before his untimely passing. Taught me to shuffle @ 1979 did Ste Hackney......... Do I sound old? Bloody well feel it thinking back to those days! Neil Jones

Now if it was Smith................... If ayone can point me in the direction of a back copy of that edition for old times sake or even a full page scan then I'd greatly appreciate it.
