I have thoroughly enjoyed this thread, It's been nice to see what peoples perspective on SOUL music is through there choices...we've had crossover choices....70's , 80's and up-to-date, out and out quality Big Money choices, RnB choices, mixed oldies thru modern, we've had it all. As you'd expect i suppose...This is a contender for thread of the year 2009 already...well done to the starter!!

It gets me thinking about an end of year do for soul-source, again. I thonk looking at these listings, it would have been a solid play list for any event. And we could go on about a venue, but somewhere like Middleton would be ideal...Main Hall(oldies"northern"-60's).....crossover sweet -late 60's/70's soul......modern room 80's to 2009.......RnB, 60's soul, new breed left side room.

There you go, everyone catered for!!

Come on MODS haven't you got enough to do ?

Alphabetical is all well and good, if you wanna go straight to a particular 45, but what if you wanna play something of a similar style to whats playing but not sure what? if you get my drift? Alphabetically doesn't mean similar styles, and changing the contents of a playbox to suit a venue would be a nightmare to do in alphabetical order, just keep em in 'blocks' of styles/eras me,

Paul that's when you start regretting after your set what you coulda played, you don't have to 'know' what goes with what, just what you think goes with what, then you can browse similar stuff if your playing a request, just my way of filing the playbox, i'm sure it's not everyones way, just a case of what's easiest for the individual,

I treid everything Pete so i think i know where a tune is in me box but when i look for it i cant find it as i must of put it in the wrong place or wrong sleeve and everytime i tell myself to try to organise myself but thats not easy for me in anything i do in life  must admit that drinking a lot dont really help either

Yes, I go with this style, with what I definately want to play at right hand front of box.

Posted

I like your style.....thats "JAZZ PICK" system!!

I kind of know where my tunes are in the box but when you think you know where it is but it aint there and you try and find it before the record playing ends and you just about manage it that alone gives me a buzz as i just cant plan a set in advance, i got an idea of some of the stuff i want to play but in what order or when or if is another thing so for me ad libbing is the only way :shades:

I bought a smaller box so its easier to not lose tunes

Posted

my filing system sounds complicated but i find it the quickest way to find a tune...especially if i change my mind at the last moment....i hate just grabbing any tune cos the playing record is ending....interupts the flow man !

my box has 3 rows...the first starts with maybe 20 rnb....then about 30 motown...then when playing go go children like friday, about 40 that have never been played there...we like to play a good ammount of 'new' tunes every month...

the next row about 40 feamale vocal then vocal groups...

the next row is all male vocals

also those that are known as classic or overplayed top 500 tunes and are more likely to be requested tend to be together at the back of the rows...simple

so i'll give you first 15 in row 2 and 3...

im gonna hold on/ marlena mars...mgm demo

ill try anything/dusty spingfield...phillips uk

gimme back my love/paulette parker...duke

too hot too hold/betty everett...vee-jay demo
