Ted Massey Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Bobby James jesus how much for the Jimmy Burns then
Mark Bicknell Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Bobby James jesus how much for the Jimmy Burns then Just thinking that myself Ted, and to think i had the Bobby James a few years back and thought i was doing well when i sold it for £650.00 to Tim of Tod..oh well Regards - Mark Bicknell.
Mark Bicknell Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 £297.00 for Barbara Carr suprised me always rated this record and often play it out and about but i think i gave about £30.00 for mine so a big leap in value on this one or is it just a little too much? Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Hi Mark didnt you get a few of Bobby a few years ago. still got mine another bargain of Andy Spencer
Mark Bicknell Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Hi Mark didnt you get a few of Bobby a few years ago. still got mine another bargain of Andy Spencer No Ted...the story goes i met him in Chicago way back early 90's he had one cracked copy stuck on a piece of cardboard mounted on his wall which he offered me i declined and said it was his and really i could not take it off him, we kept in touch when i got home and in between somebody somewhere UK based in conversation to a third party mentioned how rare and indemand the record was in the UK which filted back to Bobby plus i told him how rare it was and popular in the UK when we met so he knew he was in for a few dollars, i get a phone call from Bobby sometime after and he had found a mint copy but wanted as much as he could get for it, he sent it to me and at the time i did'nt have the cash at hand so i offered it to Tim and sent all the money to Bobby, silly bastard and honest bugger i am i just wanted to do the best for him as he was a really nice guy, so i don't regret selling it as i did the guy a favour as he was not a rich man, lost contact with him a bit back but still have a contact somewhere so i might just look him up...lol Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Mark Bicknell Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 strange how the stories get change down the line, still a rare record and got the instrumental on the b side Bobby's version is good but Mr Burns has the edge i think, also writting credits are Robert Newsome which is actually Bobby James one of the same which would suggest he recorded it first before Jimmy, i seem to remember he told me that when we met also neither Bobby or Jimmy had any knowledge of 'Brand New Faces' which is aweful anyway. And yes Ted a rare record which this auction final price reflects incredible...wish i could have kept it, still got Jimmy's Erica though...lol Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Is Bobby James' name really Bobby James? I heard it was Bobby Newsome (of the Vontastics) under another name. Can you confirm that it is a different person? Thanks a lot.

Can you confirm that it is a different person? Thanks a lot. Bobby James wrote 'I Really Love You' (i mentioned this above) under his real name Robert Newsome so as far as the Karol and Erica records go Bobby James and Robert Newsome are one of the same, i also noticed the credit on The Vontastics record but i never asked him at the time so i can't say for sure or confirm if it's the same person or if he had any connections with the group, very possible as they were Chicago based but again i'm not sure. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

The last (and only) time I saw this for sale was on Tim's auction about 2/3 months ago, I bid 2000 then and got slapped by a collector from the States by 900 quid! So my expectation this time was around the 2.2 mark. On both occasions, the Bobby has been described as rarer than the Jimmy, however I tend to disagree with this. Quality-wise there's virtually nowt between em IMO. Back to 20 quidders now for a while. Cheers... Pete happy as a pig in $hit

Pete happy as a pig in $hit Congratulations Pete, there are those who will think you are mad paying that for a record...but they don't understand the compulsion and obsessions (Sounds like I'm describing mental illness ) of wanting a record, and then finally getting a copy. Pleased as punch for you By the way Jimmy Burns is far better
Guest Jamie Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 I surprised no-one has mentioned Johnny Howard yet. Yeah I know it's taken off again the last 2/3 years, but I paid £50 for it in 2004 (not 1984!). Is that really the current value???

It's been selling for £150-£250 for quite a while now, but £457 is "a bit much".
Ted Massey Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 MMM, I'M JUST IN ONE OF THOSE STRANGE MOODS TONIGHT. SO ERR, THESE TWO QUITE POPULAR THEN ? Yes and one is genuinely rare the other is an over hyped mess that it turning up
Guest Jamie Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 It's been selling for £150-£250 for quite a while now, but £457 is "a bit much". 2-3 times the going rate - are some people not wired up properly?!?

Pete happy as a pig in $hit Hi Pete, Glad you won it mate. was just wondering why there was no sound clip on the auction? I've had 2 of these, one played ok but the other had needle burn throughout the vocal, as it's a styrene record, so could only play the instrumental. cheers pottsy
Ady Potts Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Bobby James jesus how much for the Jimmy Burns then A funny thing though, I was just thinking about the copies of Bobby James & Jimmy Burns i've seen, yet i've only seen a couple of copies of the Brand New Faces could this be the rarest of the three? Just a thought...
Julianb Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 2-3 times the going rate - are some people not wired up properly?!? Why not play the Artistics version? Much better than JH in my humble opinion.

Chris Anderton Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Ted, I wouldnt say KOS was "turning up"...we found 10 a couple of years ago, then a couple of knackered copies went thru ebay....then nothing until Dave Thorley found 2 warped copies in Chicago a few months ago...i believe the one in the auction was one of those copies. If you know of any others i stand corrected. I still rate it about a grand..... "hyped mess"!? I take it you aint got one then! See you around mate... Chris.

Ey up Dave - tha gag about mental illness is closer to the truth than you think By the way Jimmy Burns is far better Perhaps a tad, but never "far" (unless you've got one) Worth noting the sacrifices I've had to make to get my hands on this - ie Nelson Sanders, Silky Hargreaves, Timmie Williams Cheers Pete
Soulfool Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 £297.00 for Barbara Carr suprised me always rated this record and often play it out and about but i think i gave about £30.00 for mine so a big leap in value on this one or is it just a little too much? Regards - Mark Bicknell. I used to play this out in the mid-90's but ended up selling it amongst others to get other stuff - much to my regret as, apart from it being a great 45, I tried to purchase it more recently and my paltry offer of £100 was turned down, perhaps even sneered at. David
Shsdave Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 Why not play the Artistics version? Much better than JH in my humble opinion. Because the Artistics is quite nice whereas Johnny Howard is a storming dancer that pizzes all over the Artistics (who I think are brilliant by the way) of course in my humbler than thou opinion
Steve G Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 By the way Jimmy Burns is far better Absolutely B side isn't bad either.

Before you found 10 copies some people had had it for quite some time. Alex Jones found a few copies years ago, kept one, sold one to a well known DJ/collector for £100. This was according to Alex, as I recall it, the discussion was 3 years ago when he played it at our club. The other two(?) went elsewhere. I also recall that Tim Brown had recently purchased one that he played at Prestatyn, a few years back, and I believe this was some time before you found your small quantity, unless you tell me otherwise. It is quite possible that more copies are around or have surfaced, but I don't know anything about that. A messy but a very good record IMO.
Chris Anderton Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 would never have bought it mate unless it was worth it to sell it still Sh**e though ............ Ted, I must admit when i found KOS i knew of it but had never actually heard it, i took a copy and played it and said to Shifty "Are you sure thats the right record"!!!! Must say it has grown on me now and i do genuinely love the record... Must get together sometime soon mate. Chris

Ey up Dave - tha gag about mental illness is closer to the truth than you think... But didn't some scientists claim that LOVE was a "mental illness" a few years ago? So we just can't help it can we? (I wonder if they'll ever isolate the genetic code for the record collecting bug, and develop a cure?)
