Quinvy Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Can't believe what I've seen today on ebay, THE JOKERS & ROBERT TANNER sold for less than £800 each. Bloody frightening. Never happens when I bid on quality 45's. And just to make me wonder whats happening, I'm struggling to sell real quality 45's on here. Maybe bubble has burst and it's just DJ's paying big sums for tunes they don't have. Then once they have a particular tune the price drops through lack of competition. I know it's been done to death before, but those two records were really cheap. Have we turned a corner regards big prices on rare tunes?

You think the VG Robert Tanner should go higher than $1500? At least on popsike, cleaner copies went for $2000-$2500.

Might make some of these dealers peddling f**ked records at extortionate prices think again. I certainly won't pay top whack for anything less than M- The Robert Tanner was still too high, IMHO for its condition. I bid $1,000 which is only 'cos I absolutely love it, but I wasn't prepared to go any higher due to its vg rating. Edited April 11, 2007 by Trevski

Baz Atkinson Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 Agree with alot of the points made but there still is no level playing field in relation to collecting.Talked to gaz simon yesterday and he informed me that Eddie Hill had just gone for $58 ,that would take us back to late eighties prices really. On the other hand the copy of the imperial cs which had noise all the way through has just gone for over $900 us and Gonna hang on in there with a hairline crack has just gone for over 1200 dollers,so no consistency there then. As a collector of sweet soul,group soul and ballads my market has not changed for yonks but i have seen a downturn in top doller for the A list sounds except the Master 4 which seemed to shatter all expectations.Condition has definetly come more into play recently. Where collectors are really benefitting are all those lovely pieces in between,like the book stuff listed at £100 to £200 which are now ben picked up very readily for £20s 30s and 40 quids.IVE just got billy thompson on wand mint for $122 us for instance 200 quid in the book. Souljazera Posted April 11, 2007 Posted April 11, 2007 thats why ebay is sometime a good hunting ground but i agree with the previous comments about money order,,,i would never bid and vg condition records....bubble has certainly not burst...but occassionally gets corrected....thats no bad thing for buyers
Guest Dan Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 all it takes is for two people with a few quid spare to want the same record at the same time and you have an auction, and a record that 'should' sell at £500 might go for £800. next time it comes around, one of those guys now has the record, the other bought something else the day after and the bidders who are interested will only go to £400. the market in rare soul is a very imperfect one, skewed on a day to day basis by whims, trends, egos, people on holiday or away from their computer, available income, what you bought last week, what your wife wants for christmas etc etc but in general terms, said it before many times, i think prices are coming down.

All true. Got 11 records on ebay at the minute. They run out Monday night. I wish they ended on a Sunday night at the end of the month, or the very beginning of the next. Think that makes quite a difference as well.
Chris Anderton Posted April 12, 2007 Posted April 12, 2007 I noticed it at the big record show in PA recently, loads of big items for sale with even bigger price tickets and a lot of dealers who would`nt come down ended up taking the records home with them. Once they have seen a copy go through ebay or looked on popsike they think that is the going rate. One dealer who has about 3000 good northern 45s prices them on popsike and uses the guides, we visited him and bought about 12 records, we have been leaving the same records there for 3 years due to the prices. as we were leaving he said "next time you come, you can go through all this stuff again and tell me what its worth to you and we can cut a deal". Maybe the penny is beginning to drop. I still think that the big records in E+ or M- condition will still attract a good price but i do think it has levelled off over the last 2 to 3 years. Chris
