A Mistake A Mistake, It Was A Big Mistake

But in a good way?

Think back to when you first started buying soul records. When you'd hear a few lines in a song, and remember them but not know who it was or what the actual title was. Did you buy any by mistake, and it turned out to be a good one?

Reading Len Dopson's DJ profile reminded me when I bought Gene N Eddie - Its no sin.

I loved the tune played at Stafford where the girl belts out - its no sin, OHHHH Its no sin to be in love...

So once Pat Brady's list pops thru my door I scour the titles and there is Gene N Eddie,. Check sent, and its the wrong blinkin track. Nice tho, file it away for later. Later comes and you give it another listen and woosh, another fave in your box.

I eventually got a nice white demo of Gail Anderson - Be Proud (you are in love)

Earlier than that too I bought a record, because one of the lines in it said - We've got the right combination, for a great love affair........

You guessed it, despite obviously being a bloke singing (I thought Marie Knight was a fella singing thats no way to treat a girl :( ) I went out and bought Marsha Gee - Right Combination.

Lets spend some time together, seems a much better title in hindsight

Any other stories of buying completely the wrong tune, even if the artist was the same sex, by mistake, but still ending up with a nice tune in the record box?

Only one springs to mind.

Jason Knight was quite popular at the time,

so when in Global came across "My Love is Getting Stronger" by one Cliff Nobles on J-V,

Hmm... Thirty bob, it could be the same, go on then......

I bought "Say you'll be mine" by The Rosebuds on Tower thinking it was something else, 15 or so years a go. Rosebuds got more popular, but I never liked it, so I outed it. Track I was thinking of has that line in it - "say you'll be mine" gruff deep vocal. I'll have to go in Look at your box I think. But other lines in the song were "So don't ever let me down you're my queen and I'm wearing a crown, oh I hope and I pray every single day, say you'll be mine" Anyone?

i remember searching for ages for Barbara lewis - remember the feeling and Bobby Hebb- you want to change me after seeing the Morecambe pier Gary Crowley documentary on Channel 4.. videoed it and kept replaying it to work out the lyrics of the songs.. was still quite new to the Northern soul scene in those days so was still finding my way a bit with the records..

Ended up buying Sweet Sweet loving - platters and Nothings gonna change me - Dave Blocker (which i rebought again a couple of years ago!)..

Managed to get the Barbara Lewis and Bobby Hebb a few months later after talking to a few knowledgable soulies

As a spotty youth, purchased the Del Capris in the 100 Club - Hey Little Girl on Kama Sutra, thinking it was The Construction, Hey Little Way Out Girl (which I'd heard on the Soul Supply comps) Given Grapevine put it out as the Del Capris, I guess I can be slightly forgiven!!

After attending Wigan a couple of times in my early sorties into soul music,

and not wanting to look to tawatish and ask others, "whats this record called and who is singing it"

I ended up purchasing The Casinos I still love you, yep you guessed it, I was after The Seven Souls, did pick it up next visit though for £3 which i thought was a little steep at the time ohmy.gif well it was"nt that popular at the time.
