Simon T Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 i remember reading somewhere that this can be fixed ... any clues? hear attached sound clip If it's got a big hole in the middle: Get a piece of cardboard (a 7" record mailer packer will do fine) and make a hole in the middle of it the size of the spindle on your record deck and stick it on your deck. Put the record on it without an adapter and move it about until is plays OK. Press down on the record and score around the centre with a pen. Cut the 'new' centre out of the cardboard, just beyond the pen mark, and put it into the record. Stick it back in the spinde and move the record around the cardboard centre until it plays OK. Make a mark or two on the new centre and the record to show the correct place it should be inside the record.
Guest MARTIN SNOW Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 IF ONE SIDE IS OFF CENTRE AND YOU DON'T WANT TO PLAY THE OTHER SIDE THEN HERE'S WHAT TO DO : PLACE A LARGE STICKY LABEL OR GLUE A PIECE OF CARD TO THE FLIP SIDE LABEL (OR THE FAULTY SIDE IF YOU DON'T MIND IT COVERING THAT SIDES LABEL INFO), THEN WORK OUT WHERE THE EXACT CENTRE OF THE SIDE YOU WANT TO PLAY IS BY USING THE FINAL RUN OUT GROOVE AS YOUR CORRECT "CIRCLE," AND DRAW LINES ACROSS ITS DIAMETER. IN OTHER WORDS MAKING A LARGE CROSS ON THE BIT YOU STUCK ON, THEN PUNCH A HOLE FOR YOUR TURNTABLE SPINDLE AT THE CROSSING POINT OF THE LINES AND THERE YOU HAVE IT. SIMPLE AS THAT. IF YOU WANT TO PLAY BOTH SIDES AND ONLY ONE IS OFF CENTRE, THEN I SUGGEST YOU SELOTAPE THE GAUGE TO THE LABEL OF THE FAULTY SIDE AND MAKE AN ARRANGEMENT SO THAT IT CAN BE FOLDED BACK WHEN THE FLIP SIDE IS REQUIRED TO BE PLAYED. HOPE THAT HELPS, IF IN DOUBT POST UP TO SAY AS SUCH AND I'LL TRY AND EXPLAIN DIFFERENTLY. MARTIN

WHAT A WASTE. AT LEAST GOOD MINDS THINK A LIKE.
Guest SteveSnow Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 great thread - I've got a Roy Hamilton 'You Shook Me Up' that's off centre, and it's been bugging me for ages that I ought to figure how to true it up. Thanks for posting the pics & advice!

Prophonics 2029 Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Some good ideas, I use a push in centres and cut them into the new position with a knife then mark the pug in with a pen for later plays, works ok but some times it gets moved and if your in a rush to cue the record up it can get very messy.
Guest Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 (edited) I do something similar to the above solutions which is: place record on the turntable without adaptor, centre the record and place the adaptor on spindle over the record and gently mark round the adaptor in pencil where it overlaps onto the label, next time you want to play said record you just slip the record under the adaptor so it lines up with the pencil mark, if you give the turntable a slight push as you give it the button it should not slip. Paul Dunn Posted April 9, 2007 Posted April 9, 2007 I have a copy of the Vontastics - I'll Never say goodbye - Satellite The Goodbye side is pressed slightly off centre, the Don't Mess Around is pressed correct. The solution is to use one of the old triange press in centres and extend the hole with a round file towards the off centre, it takes a bit of trial and error but it is really quite simple. to play you place the spindle on the deck against the filled end to play the off centre side and the untouched centre to play the other side. Regards Paul
Kev Connellan Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 I dont use any of the home made adaptors suggested above (but may well give it a try now). I just work out where the record needs to be to offset the amount of off-center it has with the bottom of the label nearest you, then i just add a little pic to the sleeve to remind me when i play it.
Pete S Posted April 10, 2007 Posted April 10, 2007 Easiest way is just to get a normal on-centre record, place the off-centre on top if it, draw around the centre hole of the good one so you've got a mark to follow, then cut round that with a stanley knife (make sure a responsible adult is supervising). When you play the record you just move the centre adapter into the indentation you cut. Done this loads of times.

This sounds good, and has the advantage whereby you could incorporate a game based on the theory of tiddlywinks in to your set between records if every 45 was off centre, as you'd have a different adaptor for every track ! Do you think we should patent the idea before Waddingtons think of it ?

Do you think we should patent the idea before Waddingtons think of it ? Well while we're at it we could try and patent some more of my crazy record inventions like using the dishwasher for cleaning them and ironing out warps with..an iron!

There are a couple of lawyers on here who I'm sure would be happy to chase the ambulance containing a SS member and finger(s) packed in ice. (Its not much good to the soul sourcers who are only allowed crayons to play with though )
