After a bit of web surfing I came across this rather interesting book 'BRIT FUNK - The History Of British Soul Music' By Andrew Robert Heskins. Originally released in 1993, a special edition was re-released in 1999.
A quick search on UK Amazon revealed no copies however it looks like you can download it as a pdf file here
