Was told today that N. Soul magazine is no more - no longer viable.

Liked the early editions of Togetherness as it was, but felt that recently the

magazine was getting somewhat tired and repetitive.

i wrote a little something for N soul once...hope i was nothing to do with its downfall... whistling.gif ....soul up north is the best soul fanzine apart from daves soulful kinda music....cos its written by real people out there living the scene....N soul was a little too promotional for me pages and pages of adverts and no real substance...all went down hill when ali left.........

Well I can add a fresh little Cote de Provence to the alcoholic equation Cookie/Kimmy.....and a Vouvray..... and a Zinfandel......think I'm on an Easter holiday roll.

I had a creative ball, albeit a stressful one during my time working on Togetherness and N.Soul but as any of the publishers of mags and fanzines will tell you it's an almost unrealistic labour of love and trying to do it on a professional footing, balancing articles, contributions, features with those ads that pay for the print, is the toughest of calls.

I take my hat off to anyone that does it long term, and to my mind Mike Ritson and Stuart Russell were the real Dream Team at Manifesto.

As much as I relished the much missed Voices From The Shadows, and more recently In The Basement and the refreshing validlity of Soul Up North, Shades of Soul and Soulful Kinda Music, I still don't think anyone has really cracked the ultimate UK soul magazine - and that's down to us punters and collectors - our needs and interests are almost too diverse to give any one magazine a broad, yet specific identity.

I'd like to think that my brief stint refreshed the format for a moment in time, but it wasn't a sustainable relationship and it was the publishers call to bring that to an end - and once again I think Kev is right to have called it a day now. It's not something I feel comfortable saying; N.Soul was initially my adopted baby - but it hasn't been a valid soul publication recently and I know he just didn't have the time to give it the TLC it needed, hence why it became a shadow of what it should have been.

A bit like venues, every dog has it's day; and the format is no longer right for the readership which is better served elsewhere. That's not a refection of the content from the regular contributors - but there was no solid skeleton of late to hold it together with the much needed backbone.

I really appreciated the opportunity to flex my written juices. I'm a relatively mild mannered old bat but when I have a keyboard and a bottle in front of me I became brave and voice my opinion more candidly - often making Kev cringe in the process !!!

He has got a new annual publishing concept in mind - and health and enthusiasm permitting (both his, and mine) I'm happy to continue to be a part of it.

Only thing left to say is Hallelujah - no more quarterly deadlines for a column that I both loved and hated.
