shute Posted January 16, 2005 Posted January 16, 2005 (edited) i loved Parr Hall..........a traditional heaving niter.........fair Stoke contingent used to go......i attended with Ian bailey and Dave mountford.........we usually saw sedge and young shute in there........one weekend we were going we had a small crash outside Ian baileys house and banged into Nogga's mini parked on the side of the road and totalled it......(we were singing along to "yum yum tree" at the time).......undeterred we carried on to Warrington.......pulling up outside like something from a demolition derby........the front nearside door was jammed so it was kicked open to a big cheer from the queue waiting to get in........afterwards a load of people went back to IBs house and proceeded to try to mend noggas" write off "on Sun morn...happy days link Is that you Jimmy B ? Just to cap things...Sedge is now married, sold his collection to Manship. Ian and helen Bailey still go to a few places now and then..Alsager and the likes......even seen Crumb & Dawn there...... I've been going round for years swearing it was by somebody Valentine..thought I was going mad. Made it even more confusing cos he gave it a different title too!
Guest Awake 502 Posted January 17, 2005 Posted January 17, 2005 (edited) Will be him mate.... he did a few places in the 80's.... don't think he did Clifton Hall but do know he did Queens Hall and others with Steve.... plus the odd guest spot elsewhere.... Know both of them (D & S) co-ran a "freebie" thing in Rotherham on a Sunday night way back when (late 80's I think).... seem to remember the place being called "Capones".... link Hi Mark, Well I'm still around, still got the records just don't get to too many places these days. Winsford Soul Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Was just talking about Tony's empress on another thread and it got me thinking about favourite old venues and my personal favourite old venue Warrington Parr Hall. Ah the memories, the train trip from Oxford road, meeting your mates in the queue outside and catching up, orange ice lollies, sixties newies, SOS bootlegs...then the horrendous wait for the bus home in the morning (Sunday engineering works..nothings' changed since)... and cups of tea in the arndale cafe with Malcolm Talcum You know loads of people say the scene died for years after Wigan but Parr Hall was always rammed every 2 weeks for a good few years. Did anybody on here go? Never missed any of them, living in Widnes at the time so only a 10min bus ride away infact it was close enough for one of my mates Kenny to ride there on his push bike.

ManilaSoul Posted September 23, 2005 Posted September 23, 2005 Parr Hall, my Wigan. If I remember rightly started as a Friday niter then switched to Saturdays. Fantastic atmosphere, fav story getting my younger brother (15 yrs old) to go up to Pat Brady and ask for 'Treat me like a man' the old cover up name for Trick me, Treat me - Cobblestone. Our kid only knew it from an old Wigan tape. Pat asked him if he meant 'Trick me treat me' but my brother being 15 insisted it was 'Treat me like a man'. Back he came so we sent him back up to request the tune then Pat politely told him that was what it had been called when covered up 10 years previously. Brother looks down to see us lot pissing ourselves. Mind you fair play to Pat who clocked what was happening he played it. Great atmosphere, great sounds, great people. Remember they had a dayer couple of years after it stopped being a niter and opened up the back bar they had never had opened during the time it was a niter, could have have done with that open during the Edwin Starr nights etc. Cheers Shane - Manila.
Guest carolyn Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Fond memories of Parr Hall allnighters after Wigan Casino. Went many times with Bernadette from Ashton. Saw Edwin Starr there a couple of times at the nighters. Funnily enough happened to go again this year, gosh its changed, its gone all posh! My cousin's husband has just become the mayor of Warrington and his mayoral ceremony (with a soul band) was held there earlier in the year. He is very much into northern soul. It was certainly something to see 'The mayor' soulie dancing wearing his 'chains'. Don't suppose we have had many soulie mayors!

You can find Mike Pheonix at his scooter shop in Manchester...The business is called Pheonix Heinz(i think)...
Platters 81 Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 an additional story re Parr Hall.....while in the record dealers section i noted Keith M. approach ..i think it was Pat Bradys sales section.....(two tables)...Keith was having trouble with his leg at the time and was on one crutch...as i remember it...Pat handed KM a few 45's ..and rather than multitask Keith put his crutch right across ..and on top of the lanes of Pats 45 s.....(much to PB's consternation)......this momentarily confused the assembled collectors searching through PB's boxes...who,after a brief moment of head scratching....continued to look at PB,s records through the various triangular slats of Keiths wooden crutch...happy days

I did, (as one of the Stoke 'contingent') I loved it there actually (second only to Stafford) great venue and sounds...the venue (in my mind anyway) reminds me now of the Kings Hall ? (the stage anyway) I always remember going here one particular night with Butch and Keith Minshull (in Butch's old burgundy VW beetle) ....I couldnt have been much more than 18....first (and last) time I got absolutely t*atted (its a French term) on too much Will o the Whizz, and spent more time paranoid in the loos than I actually did in the main hall....I did live and learn though.Musically Pat Brady's sets stood out...would love a tape Mark!
