So I prefer 70 s soul, 80 s soul etc. Most decades show a significant shift in instrumentation and styles so as a form of classification that would be my preference. Modern soul to me is the new stuff coming out from wonderful soul artists like Rahsaan Patterson, Maysa Leak and Phil Perry. Shall I get my tin hat?

So I prefer 70 s soul, 80 s soul etc. Most decades show a significant shift in instrumentation and styles so as a form of classification that would be my preference. There seems to be some confusion here between the LITERAL definition of the word "modern" (ie. contemporary/recent recordings) and the UK "Modern Soul" scene. These are very different! The term 'MODERN', used in relation to the UK 'Modern Soul' scene, relates to those records favoured on that particular club scene, and can include anything from late 'sixties 'crossover' recordings up to present day CD tracks. The term was originally coined simply to distinguish it from the 'traditional' Northern Soul scene which (mainly) relies on records with the characteristics of 60s Detroit and Chicago et.al., rather than the rhythms and musical arrangements that came later. There have been several threads on this subject lately - and not a few heated arguments, so, 'nuff said! (Several years ago, Rod Dearlove wrote a more than adequate description of the "Modern Soul Scene" in 'Voices From The Shadows' magazine, which I will have to copy and post up for future reference, as this topic crops up all too frequently!) In the "Northern" use its any record recorded after Dec 31st 1969 Am I right or am I right? Cheers Paul
