Simon T
and give me my records back !! LOL I suppose you'd want them back at the prices I paid you for them? OK my 20 minute spot would be Ben Jackson, Ujima, Lust and the Power of Attorney Band! Would that temp you back from your lav break? Simon T
Do people actually still travel and attend certain venues because certain DJs are on? If so, find out who they are and book them. I'd go for DJs than can play a mixture of eras and styles for hour spots. Plus maybe some that are more specific in their plays, but only let them have two 30 minute spots (stop the moaners kicking off?) All the DJs should be there for the duration to stop repeat plays - they go on in ascending order of their alcohol tolerance. Have a request sheet on the door for the DJs to peruse before they go on and hopefully oblige in their spot. Also, might stop DJs playing some cack that just want to hear and getting away with it by saying 'request' before they play it. Link to comment Social source share
Simon M
I can understand why DJ's dont do requests Simon and I think longer spots are needed . Dont mind repeat plays if someone has something really fresh!! .. But yep you would need some kind of guard against repeats with 6 hotbox types Edited February 14, 2008 by Simon M Link to comment Social source share

Guest malayka
what i do in bamberg: - booking djs who go on well with each other ( if the athmosphere within the djs is good, the crowd does notice that...a psychological thing, i suppose) - djs who are flexible and can play a broad variety ( if necessary), but also give them the freedom to play whatever they want! - some people will travel for big names (i never would invite a dj just because its a big name), but i also invite people i believe they have a fantastic taste and are underrated, or did just start djing ( markus sichter for example!!!) - i try to make it for all of 'em a very special experience, they are all treated the same way (no superstar behaviour please!!!), we all together go out for meals for example, create something around the actual event, try to make it unique, so that the crowd as well as the djs love coming back! regarding the "hot box" topic...well, i thought every dj plays his hottest tunes anyway... Len
its down to the promoter really ? All depends what a promoter is doing it for. I used to book The Embankment Club's DJ's purely because I alone rated them. Then adding a few to make sure it wasn't too 'self indulgent' so as not to have low numbers. But it was run as I wanted a soul night to be....Never made a lot of cash though! lol Len. Link to comment Social source share

Ezzie Brown
this is interesting, the lads who just started soul shack in culceth wanted to be a bit different, first nite djs were promoters, a mate ofthres who djs, apologies, name escapes for the moment, established dj mr mike wharburton , and me, second ever go at it, played what they wanted, great nite, similar formula plannd for net 2, im not involved, they have mark bicknell then stevie z, both shouldbe a bit different than the norm, so go and take a look, any do merv parnell organises is "out of the norm" and DDA at lowton also. if its money ur after big names, playin known records to same 300 out every weekend at the big rooms. ezzie Link to comment Social source share

Chalky
as long as some thought and imagination goes into the sets and they "flow" I couldn't care less who is DJing. Obviously need couple of big names but the rest can be made up of residents who don't follow the flock and upcoming guests of the same ilk. You can keep those who throw money at records and just play the big money indemanders....hot boxers!! I want some imagination and bit of thought put into a set. cloth ears
A)Book all the top Hotboxers and pack it out , and hope the same 40 records don't get played over and over this comment i think is the top gripe you will hear at venues, why some of the " top names" play sounds that have recently played . its not difficult is it? turn up an hour before and ask people and care abit more. Guest dundeedavie
That is far too sensible and the recipe for an excellent night ... please stop posting immediately i apologise for a rare moment of sensibility as for the earlier comment of it being hard work , a promoter should work hard and the hardest part of my job as promoter is working out when the dj's will be on ....this is done depending on style so there isn't too big a jump in styles regardless of how "big " the name is . it's not only sets that should flow , nights should as well Link to comment Social source share
Paul-s
All the DJs should be there for the duration to stop repeat plays - This is a must, im sick of djs who turn up, do a spot and go. They dont come to contribute to a night and have had no input to the creation of the night, musically! They dont support the flow and continuity and Have obviously not come for a good ALL IN party. I think its selfish and egotistical to assume you operate independently at a night. You need to work with the other dj's and dancers to create it.
