Sunnysoul Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Don't ask me why , but I would be very grateful if someone could post a scan of the US issue seven of Afternoon of the Rhino by the Mike Post Coalition .. and did it ever appear on an LP of his ? Incidentally would also appreciate any Wigan survivors rosy coloured memories of just how popular this was on the dancefloor !

Pete S Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 You're right Keith, there is no US 45, only the bootleg on Soul World. It's LP only, and the single they took off it was Bubblegum Breakthrough (which is great by the way)
Barry Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Still love the crazy flute/brass stab ending. Wigan was on a high with a full floor when this got dropped.

Pauldonnelly Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 when this came on you looked for your Mrs as the stampede for a space was sometime life threatning. If I had to compose a Casino memories CD this one would have to be on it...

Guest mrjp Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 hi all , just played afternoon of the rhino , great memorys of wigan early years, listen to this now ,it does not sound that good ,but in its time ,it must have been the number one tune ever played at wigan , when this was played the whole place shuck, every body rushed to the dance floor , remember getting a list of russ winstanley in about 1974 ish , with mike post lp on , for sale , 100 pounds .yours mr j p
Paul R Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Maybe out of touch today but at the time absolutely massive. Wasn't Bubblegum Breakthrough the first track played just pre Wigan. & Rhino, the more obvious track was a bit later though still early Wigan '73? Anyone PM me an mp3 of bubblegum breakthrough. I hadn't heard it for years. Paul
Soulfulhound Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Thats correct, Bubblegum breakthrough was a big sound at VA-Va and Leeds Central in 73, prior to Wigan. Kev Roberts got the Fused LP for B.B. to play at Wigan and found Afternoon on the rhino, which he played and as we know became massive. AAhh Happy Days - smashed until Tuesday !!

Incidentally would also appreciate any Wigan survivors rosy coloured memories of just how popular this was on the dancefloor ! There is NO US 7" of this track! It was always played off the album, in 1974. Only "Bubblegum Breakthrough" was released on US 45 and was popular on the Northern scene in late 1973. "Afternoon Of The Rhino" was probably the BIGGEST instrumental of it's time, though it started off at Blackpool Mecca I believe. However Wigan Casino was probably it's natural home! Guest mel brat Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Was this an intentional double meaning Steve Note to contributors: Are you AT ALL capable of talking about the MUSIC without these constant pathetic references to your personal drug consumption? It's very tiresome.
Guest Jimmy Scriv Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 I remember a couple of years back Ian Levine played this at the Highland Room Reunion and said that although a Wigan Sound it was first played at Blackpool Mecca. Along with Soul Improvisations Rhino IMO, one of the best instrumentals to be played on the scene.
givemesoul Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Note to contributors: Are you AT ALL capable of talking about the MUSIC without these constant pathetic references to your personal drug consumption? It's very tiresome. Is it that tiresome as the scene was mainly built upon the two things, music & drugs,as I'm sure anybody who went to the catacoombs etc will tell you,the odd reference here & there doesn't offend me
Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 I've got the Fused album for sale if anyone wants to make me an offer? Phil. Re the album cover of " Fused " ...... " Tonight , Matthew , I am going to be ........ Bill Gates " Malc Burton

Guest Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 LOL........ Let's get it straight ...... Substance use has never been a part of the Northern Soul scene ...... Malc Burtongollum.bmp
Spanner Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Still love the crazy flute/brass stab ending. Wigan was on a high with a full floor when this got dropped. True but what else got dropped ,what big eyes you have

I've got "Rhino" on a black label by the Charades although it's not titled "Rhino". Can't remember without digging it out. Jordi

Can't remember without digging it out. Jordi Jordi, I think what you have is a tailor made vocal to AOTR by the so called Charades "Dreaming a Fantasy" or something like that, with the inst on the flip. Done around the same time as the (not) Dena Barnes - "These Heartaches" with Duke Browners backing track and a vocal to Double Cooking among others. The first boot of the tune was on Soul Beat as far as I remember and was white with black print and credited it to "of the Rhino" rather than "on". Godz
macca Posted April 2, 2007 Posted April 2, 2007 so was rhino bigger than double cookin' then? I didn't get to wigan till early 75 when records like that had probably been dropped in favour of stuff like 'love bandit'.
