Bless you Pete where ever you are. xxx He fooking scared me a few times I got on well with Pete (most of the time ) and miss him. He was a gent that kept us all on our toes; had his own set of rules (some of them were bang on) all driven by sheer pasion for the scene. RIP Pete. Unique!!
Platters 81 Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 me and PL found we had a mutual like of Motown 45s.....Dave Alcock had a hilarious story about Pete visiting for Christmas dinner.......this sleeve is one of Petes i saved......the £5 record was Ray and Dave on Mica.......wasnt this one of those "made-up 45s?

Trev Thomas Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 bernard williams -needless to say / focused on you, is the record that always reminds me of pete, back in the 80's when rob marriot was playing it pete said he would get me a copy, next time i saw him he gave me a copy of the 2nd issue, he didnt want anything for it & got quite stroppy when i tried to get him to take any money for it, ive had many oppurtunities to get an original since, but i think i'll stick with the one that pete gave me smashing bloke, sadly missed

However as it's the 14 anniversary of when Pete was taken from us I need to add something. One record that reminds me of Pete and to date I cannot play without having tears in my eyes is Charles Perry, How Can I (Keep From Crying) Magnum 728, sorry, don't know how to post sound files guys. Pete and I used to share tapes in the 70s and 80s and I'd give my collection up before I'd let these go. Sadly missed Pete. rest in peace, never forgotten. Dean Anderson.

But he made such an impression on me and others. Most of the times I got to speak to Pete Lawson, it was to buy records from him -- in my limited experience, he was always remembered who you were, was always generous with his thoughts on music and what you were buying/ought to buy instead, and was always ready to take the p**s when apt. My first ever record from him was the Voices of East Harlem for one pound fifty, and one of my last was a copy of Tammy Wayne that he insisted he take a third off coz the label was muckier than he remembered it being. He looked totally nonplussed when I thanked him, as if he was horrified at the thought he would have done anything else. In a scene in which a good few nonentities went out to patronise and rip-off everyone they didn't think useful to them, Pete Lawson was one of the true giants that made Northern Soul something to be proud of.

Tfk Posted March 31, 2007 Posted March 31, 2007 Pete Lawson, Were have the last 14 years gone,it doesnt actually seem 2 minutes since i was exchanging notes with him,when he was in the process of compiling his Rare Soul magazines..[essential reading].I would spend hours with him discussing different aspects of the scene at a saturday nighter ,then the first call you would get on a monday was from Pete from a public phone box to confirm notes[ long before the days of mobile phones etc],i can hear the operater now saying you have a call from Ormskirk,reverse charges will you accept yes no problem i would reply! The record that always reminds me of Pete is Bonnie Blanchards "Youre the Only One", i remember playing this out and Pete shooting over to the decks to see what it was and if i could get him a copy! Pete Lawson sadly missed ,never ever forgotten. RIP Andy & Susanne Whitmore.

Guest Spinning Vinyl Posted April 1, 2007 Posted April 1, 2007 Brillaint Thread Joan, Great memories from one of the scenes biggest devotees, Things that made me smile were his and Nick Birch's renditions of the Cheeky Chappie, His arguements down the pub in Loughborough with some soulies who were pro modern and Pete on the 60s side, which basically ended with his words "Ive been going longer than you, Im right, your wrong and thats final" all the faces went straight and quiet! Point made! One song that always reminds me of him, apart from Big Maybelle - Lord... and Jack Montgomery - Dear Beloved is Darrel Banks - Open The Door To Your Heart, class tune for top bloke. Chris
