Richard Searling Tunes

Recommended Posts

I was talking to Richard Searling at Prestwich recently, about a record that I'd heard him play at many moons ago, which had become not only one of my all time favorite records but one of my most elusive 'wants'.

I got to thinking how many bloody tunes this guy had played over time, that had become, not only some of my favorite records, but i'll bet many other peoples as well.

I guess all you have to do is think about are some of the venus he's been associated with, Va Va's Wigan, Stafford, Morecambe, Rotherham (and that's just the 'Northern' venues) to realise how influential he's been.

The record was The Notations on TAD............ Just wondered if there's any other records he's championed over the years, that have remained favorites of fellow Soul Sourcers?

All credit to Richard for his good taste, but I don't know about the Thelma Jones LP track and General Johnson, as they were both very well known as new releases in 1978 and 1976 respectively. General Johnson even got a UK release at the time and was a common find in Soul Packs.

The Barbara Mason side is great. It was also a big record at the Catacombs in 1973 however.

Nice one Billy, maybe in the latter days of Wigan and through their obvious business links but let's be honest he must have pulled thousands of records from 'other' sources as every top DJ would do to craet that very 'Hot Box'

"Don't Walk Away" was bought as a new release by many people who didn't wait until it was "discovered" later by DJs on the soul scene. It was also on General Johnson's album before the 45 was issued.

The same applies to "How Could You Break My Heart" by Bobby Womack. Many Womack fans bought it and loved it long before it was "discovered".

You're right of course-it's just that these tracks remind me of the sort of things Richard played in his golden era for me which was Parkers Hotel in Mcr.

There were several tracks released from the Thelma Jones album. (The incredible "Salty Tears" of course got a UK release on CBS in 1976) I'm personally not aware of "How Long" being issued on 45, though I have only had demo copies of the single releases and it may be lurking on one of the B-Sides! If my memory serves, Deborah Laws (sister to Ronnie & Eloise) also did a version of the song on her Elektra album C.1982

The other two singles released from the album were "I'd Rather Leave When I'm In Love" and the cover of the old Miracles tune which I forget at the moment! ("Tracks Of My Tears" was it?)

Not being pedantic or anything but it was covered as the Vel-vets....and Thelma Jones "Salty Tears" has to be one of my favourite slowies - didn't know it until my girlfriend at the time played it to me in '83, managed to pick up a demo Lp of it a little later.

where do you start with Richard? He almost single-handedly made the Casino Saturday nights interesting in its latter years. Favourite tunes he championed? Just about everything that was ever released on Grapevine (and he has publicly acknowledged how important Jon Anderson at Soul Bowl was).

Younger members of SS may not realise how many still-popular rare tracks were pushed by Mr S at the Casino. Including: Mr Soul, Jimmy Burns, Carol Anderson, the Deadbeats, Cecil Washington, Court Davis, Larry Houston, Sam Williams, Eddie Holman Where Im Not Wanted, Daybreak, Rita and Tiaras, Construction Hey Little Way Out Girl (sounds awful now), Betty Boo, Bobby Hutton Lend A Hand, Heartache Souvenirs, Curtis How Can I Tell Her (fantastic, let's revive it!) , Phyllis Hyman, Skip Mahoney, ZZ and Co, Tyrone Barclay, etc etc etc

He also leaned heavily towards the Mecca sounds in the mid 70s, ie Mel Britt, Lou Edwards, Today's People, Jerry Fuller, Anderson Bros, Billy Woods, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah. I am sure we could go on all day. The Casino has its critics (many of whom never went) but top this lot!

PS He is accused by Russ of playing Gary Lewis's My Heart's Symphony once, but denies this! :) But he did play Babe Ruth repeatedly :)

I always rated Richard in the early days, possibly because my first nighter was Vavas, but I was talking to him one evening walking down to the Casino for a Friday early session, and he was really enthusiastic about a couple of new versions of "Blowing My Mind To Pieces" plus the instrumental!!.

After I heard Paula Rousell, Bob Relf(New version) & the inst. He really went down in My estimation.

A bit later he went very '70s, doing things like Angels in Burnley.

Happily he returned to the fold properly towards the end of Wigan and made it all better.

I have been trying to get Mr Searling to grace the decks and do a Northern spot at Prestwich for a while now, mostly in response to all the people who request Northern on his radio show, anyway he's agreed and he will be playing Northern this Friday at the Longfield Suite, Prestwich.

Should be good!.........Looking forward to it already.......................................

I think the Phonetics Boys dream was his Eddie Holman C/U

Think you're right there Ted which reminds me of some of his 'stranger' inventions such as 'Lee Moore and the Resourceful Ones' and The Phantom Janitor' !!!! didn't some tracks actually get 'released' as the cover up artist/title?

Perhaps I shouldn't go there.................

Sorry to butt in on this mutual adulation session, Richard was certainly the man at Wigan, but then he had access to all the big records via John Anderson at the time and compared to Winstanley, any DJ would have shone

Gary Rushbrooke was as good

Butch blows him away and has had to work much harder for his records

Since then he has been ok but in modern terms not a patch on Bob Jones or Mike Stephens. Dean Johnson was always a better DJ at Parkers.

So full respect to Richard but the adulation is and has always been over the top .

Peace be with you

Its difficult to compare Butch to Richard because of the different eras they were big in!

However For all the great records Butch finds I am yet to hear him play something so extrordinarily different as much as Richard did in the 70s.

When Butch plays something so revolutionary as Cleveland Eatons - Quasar one then we can start comparing.

P.S. If anyone see Richard on Friday will they give him this message

Steve Eckersley is Still waiting for a cd with the aformentioned track on it! Pretty please Richard
