I used to pal about with the Nottingham soul crowd in 66/67/68. We'd meet up at the Mojo in Sheffield till that closed in September 67. I'd also call in at Nottingham on my way to the Nite Owl (Leicester) from mid to late 67. Some of their soul crowd drifted into going to the Wheel when both the Owl & Mojo had gone by November 67 (as did I).

They had some great clubs back in their hometown in the 60's (Dungeon, Beachcomber, Boat Club, Britannia Rowing Club, etc.) but I never attended any of them. Notts Palais also had a good reputation.

Later on (when I was living in Worksop -- 80's) we used to attend the soul do's / live shows @ Rock City. Had some great nights there. Also went along to a couple of nights at the Boat Club around then.

Yep, a real hot bed of soul music was/is Nottingham. The Boat Club, at the side of the Trent, and next to the Forest ground is still going great guns. Sells out.

I hope you're well Roburt.

Nottingham has always been my home and a wonderful place to appreciate Soul from.

It's a thriving scene here, the Blackheart nighters, Festival Inn, constant little things around the city, the Palais nights in early 1990s were incredible (and now back) with lots of the new Motown discoveries being played early on, less prominant local nighters at such as Trent Uni and Notts County ground, R&B nights at Bunker's Hill.  I have had and have great fun. The Boat club and Brit are ten minutes walk from me. Rob Smith's shop, Soulville Steakhouse, it's been great. For about a decade Sunday night here used to be buzzing with Soul in many of the pubs (it may still be). Then getting out across the county there are always things in each local town going on. Not far also out to wider Midlands and coastal events. Plus, Nottinghamshire people here in my orbit are passionate about Soul Music, it's wonderful.

I will pop into this bar when in the city socially, but I don't get there much now.

On Nottingham venues, it's lost to history now but apparently before Dungeon etc, the go-to venue in Nottingham was the Nottingham Polytechnic Social on a Friday, the Newton Building. Was where the Mods and Soul fans used to go at that time (my older friend used to go with his friend, the designer Paul Smith).

Bloody heck, I've just spilt my coffee all over my laptop reading this flyer.

A very interesting description of forthcoming acts Carl Douglas & Jimmy James & The Vagabonds
