What's so hard to understand ?

It's an auction of a rare item in great nick that two punters wanted , and one of them was prepared to pay a bit more than the other.

Is it that rare? I don't think so. Those turn up quite often, more demos than issues I think, but its not mega rare and all that.

Why do these auction results get posted up on this site? so we can nag about the prices....

Because you'd be lost without something to whinge about on a Wednesday evening if they weren't , that's why ...

And a 45 doesn't need to be in the so-called 'mega-rare' bracket (that you used not me) to make £300 , we.ve seen bootlegs make that before.

Holly St James looks nice - I do like those ABC promos. It's still a stonker of a northern soul record - one of those mega, atmospheric things from my youth.

Issue's a lot scarcer than a demo , but saying that some plum paid £892 for a demo on the bay at the end of September ... !

I had a little dabble at Shepards early on, but not at that price. Think I paid £75 for my demo.

In real the Monarch styrene abc (not PARAMOUNT) pressing is the rarest pressing variant for this Shepards 45. Then comes its abc stocker vinyl counterpart.

Then only the ABC-PARAMOUNT stocker and finally its white label promo variant being the most "common" one. Not necessary less desirable all the same.

Yet I'd doubt that the price should differ that much in regard of rarity factor for any of these variants. Just a seller's pitch infatuation argument IMHO.

I do wonder if a lot of these records are nice quality records, and in some cases rare too! However there’s records to own and play at home, then there are the niter and soul nites records, seems to me that the two differ greatly! The shepards is a quality tune, but it’s never grabbed the floor!

OK I get your point on the 'dee-jay' and the NS dancers in this matter (but also true in other circles). We see it happening just too often. Until the forwarded dee-jays get shadowed by some BIG name for "kicking it off"... Any of that do indeed affect the demand and so the prices accordingly.

These Sunday soul sessions seem to have opened the door to home listening soul getting played in a social venue environment so maybe raising appreciation of this type of sound ? And thus pushing prices up.

I was just going to say the Northern Soul scene is just a part of the equation now. You only have to read this post to see some still think it’s the only part that matters, it isn’t.

I find the records with less immediate dance floor appeal have greater longevity but probably take far longer for demand to grow.

personally I prefer these slower less instant sounds

Chalky is right,it isn’t all just about northern anymore! If you want a good time and dance to stuff you’ve grown up listening to then there are loads of places to attend ,also chill out places, and places that play a bit of all sorts! But I do think it’s the major niters that drive the values on records,if a big name starting hammering the shepards at every major niter then the value would no doubt well exceed even the 350 mark! Personally I love the record, but wouldn’t pay past the 150 quid regardless of any demand or popularity

Holly St James 🙄  is it just me,  or does anyone else nip  to the bog when this sort or thing comes out of the speakers?    clearly lots love it,  but i've never even thought it a good record    ho hum.

Regarding The Shepards, is it just my hearing or are the lead vocals really poor on that record. It could be my hearing because I've recently decided the lead vocals of The Changing Scene "When the city sleeps" are really bad as well. I'll book myself in for a check up.🤔

Maybe it's the demand from the Northern scene that increases prices in absolute numbers. But I think it's been the lowrider/sweet soul 45s that are skyrocketing these days in relation to what they did cost say 10/15 years. And many if not most of them are bought by UK collectors.

If memory serves me right The Shepards was played and very popular pre 100 Club at the 6ts soul nights , and then early doors at the 100 Club too .

I'm sure someone else must remember 😏

When I sold obscure ballads most went back to states or Japan but that was a while ago now.  There obviously are UK based collectors but I don’t think they are the majority for this sound.
