Kev Edwards, Bad Ass, Fergie, Ray Rose, Soul Sam amongst others on the decks, so a real mixed bag was always on offer - this venue kind of broached your normal soul venue's approach to what could be played to a crowd I think.

Sam Dees (twice), Leroy Hutson, Benny Latimore, Jo Armstead, Shirley Jones, Willie Clayton, Candyce McCord, Omar Chandler, Willie Clayton, Ronnie McNeir, Billy Griffin, The Three Degrees, Keni Stevens, Fifth Of Heaven, Northbeat, Alison Limerick were just some of the acts that performed at this little roof-top venue in Warrington.

Can't remember - do recall several footie players having a good night out though! Was it Paul ince and Paul Parker?

Also recall Sam Dees, think he'd done Southport the night before. This was at the time of "After all", which of course was goosebump stuff, but he also did "Lonely for you baby" to the delight of the NS people there!

Aye, good memories fella, great tro hear from you. :wicked:

I do a bar in Stockton Heath in Warrington on Thursdays - Soulful House and on Sundays - Northern, Soul, Funk, Disco etc...and a bar in Warrington town after midnight on Saturday's.

I still run the 'On Hubert Street' events up here, which is a domain for old soulies that felt the house vibe biggrin.gif , I would normally be doing one in April but I've just moved house and I'm a bit all over the place at the mo mate.

How you and where you attending?

Managed to visit the Carlton a few times (have lots of family in warrington) and always enjoyed it. Remember calling in on the way back from a weekender with a mate, who was well impressed with the music and friendly crowd.

Used to go to a club in Warrington in the mid seventies and am sure it was The Carlton. We called off there on our way to Wigan on a Saturday night but after 30+ years my memory needs upgrading.

Wow! The Carlton. That brings back memories. Great nights out, Brian Rae as dj, one of the nicest human beings I have ever known. At the end of the night it was down to the Hoagy Wagon near the station before trundling home. I didn't live in Warrington long (I was only related by marriage!) but I had a great time while I was there.

The Carlton was up two flights of stairs, and it took you into the club which was above Woolworths. From my fading memory I don't think there was even a sign above the door at the side of Woolies, just a door !

Inside I remember it being dark, with dividing panel things that used to have huge cartoons on them, fairly small dancefloor as well for the size of the club. Seems so long ago now, this would have been 75 / 76 time.

God, the Carlton Club, that really brings back memories, anyone remember the Patton Arms by the station? always good for a few ales while waiting for the train to Wigan.

Used to go in the Patton Arms most Sat,s Get the last Crosville bus from Widnes, Just catch last orders, then get the train over the road at Bank Quay to the Casino.

Steve

I remember you, you were that bloke by the bar ... good beer I remember though.

The Carlton Club was an institution in Warrington. Huge hangout for the Yanks during the war with plenty of knee trembling activities in the alleyway by the side of the church (according to my dad). I remember jazz funk nights in the early 80's there before i moved to the USA in '86, the rockers had friday nights, the soul and funk was on Saturdays, strippers Saturday lunchtime, the place did it all. I know Ike and Tina Turner performed there as well as a slew of other high end acts.

The Hoagy Wagon was the scene of many people leaving there well earned money in the Crossville bus station parking lot after too much to drink around town. The same parking lot that later saw Mr Smiths action.

Happy Days

used to go to the Carlton Club on a sunday night after the WHEEL in the 1970s. BObby Houghton Dennis Shannon Weno and many others were mates of mine! GREAT TIMES had back then

PS am still touch with weno and julie these days!! and may i add Leon has grown up into a gorgeous young man

WOOHHAAA Sundays were never the same when that ended what a night and what music, sometimes id kip in the car and go to "hot wax" records the next morning to see if Kev had any of the tunes he'd hammered in stock,

Brilliant...still got me dodgy membership card in a wallet in a tea chest in the loft with load of other very early soul weekender t shirts and badges etc

meet 2 cracking lads from warrington one was called daz big into modern had a amazing collection, new them from the queens hall in bradford and came back to my gaff in morecambe after an all nighter in morecambe and dragged me 2 an do in a giant tent, think one of them worked at hot wax records with kev

Pretty sure a few of us went up to the Carlton club on scooters from Stoke many moons ago.

Seem to remember the 2 flight of stairs and pictures or posters of soul artists on the walls (this sticks in my mind as I'm sure I can remember one of Herbie Goins & The Nightimers amongst them)?
