One element of northern soul culture that I can't recall being documented is the use of fans by ladies at venues to cool themselves after dancing. No cheap shots here, we are gentlemen in the main, let's behave like such. 

Any road, I know it's not exclusive to soul events but its gone on since I started, and today and they are still in use. Did the girls at Wigan use them? When did this activity start?

I remember when a girl on the dancefloor near me had a fan that she accidently dropped a few times. I think I was meant to be gallant and pick it up for her!    But she was trouble, so I didn't take the bait

My wife always had a fan at Wigan. Bottom corner near the mens toilets, wafting away 10 to the dozen, talking to the old bloke who always hovered about there (What his job was god only knows)

First time I came across this was at the rugby niters.  It's a great way to speak to someone of opposite gender ( have to stay woke) who you might like. Ask to borrow their fan to cool down with whilst chatting away.. my only problem was that I was so messed up as normal I forgot who I'd been talking to  

Makes me wonder how the hell I got married and had children
