Kesalocasoul Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 Is anyone on here still subscribing to Blues and Soul, in any of its formats? I was an avid reader back in the day and founder John E. Abbey was a great influence on my Soul musical journey. My collection runs from May 1966 (then Home of the Blues) to number 1000 in about 2007, although with hindsight I should have given up at about 500! The reason I ask, is out of the blue I received an e-mail alerting me to the issue 1070 with Alison Moyet (sic), Four Tops, DJ Terry Jones, Elijah Baker and Dave Godin (see pic). Perhaps this is some kind of a scam as the B&S website tells me they had already reached issue 1101 and their archive shows that 1070 was something completely different (not sure if these are printed or digital magazines). Or is there a rival publication? I shall be grateful if anyone can tell me what's going on? 1
Solution Soul Jones Posted December 1, 2024 Solution Posted December 1, 2024 Hi Mate, I'm one of the B&S writers - I wrote the Elijah Baker feature mentioned above. It's not a scam; the numbering on the old website is incorrect. For instance, the edition with the artist Ahi on the cover is listed there as being 1100 when it was actually 1050 (see pic below). Not sure how that got scrambled, but the current magazine is definitely 1070. Hope that helps. Cheers, Dan 1
Kesalocasoul Posted December 3, 2024 Author Posted December 3, 2024 Dan, Thank you for taking the time to reply. Glad the magazine continues to introduce Soul music, in its widest forms, to a new generation. My sole (!) contribution, apart from a few letters, was a double page article on Tyrone Davis in issue 688, back in 1995, (although the editor of the day rather scrambled the ending). Kevin 1
Popular Post Mark R Posted December 3, 2024 Popular Post Posted December 3, 2024 (edited) Was an avid buyer/reader, loads still here. Here's my year end 1992 chart in Searling's Soul Sauce column. Happy days! In good company with some of the other contributors named there too. Cheers, Mark R Edited December 3, 2024 by Mark R 4
Popular Post Kesalocasoul Posted December 4, 2024 Author Popular Post Posted December 4, 2024 And here is the chart from the very first issue of Home of the Blues (Blues and Soul's predecessor) from May 1966, presumably typed by John E. Abbey. Some great tunes. 3 1

Kevin Wow, I remember that Tyrone Davis article! I think it’s what led me to buy Tyrone Davis’s greatest hits on Rhino. Thank you so much - it sent me on an odyssey of uptown soul music!

Cheers, Mark R Proper legends in the house on this thread! Mark, I totally remember your contribution. Back in 1992/93, I used to rinse these mags cover to cover - I could pretty much memorise every word! Nowadays, of course, I can’t remember what I did last weekend! But back then, stuff like these charts were really important to me - exotic names like Chante Moore, Chuckii Booker, Walter & Scotty, Gary Taylor and The Dells. This page brings back loads of memories. Thanks for posting. 1

Actually there were at least two, as much of the article reappeared in another fanzine a short time after. I had decided to write it because, in spite of supposed close links between B&S and Tyrone Davis, only four major articles appeared on Tyrone in the magazine between 1966 and 1995: issues 36 (June 1970); 299 (February 1980); 584 (April 1991); and 620 (Sept 1992). In the same period Tyrone had no fewer than 43 records on the Billboard R&B charts. I felt he deserved more coverage. For those wanting even more on Tyrone, read Heikki Suosalo's discography and articles on the Soul Express website. https://www.soulexpress.net/tyronedavis_discography.htm and search for the article in In The Basement #64 ((December 2011), which begins with "Remarkably, despite the number of hits under his belt, not a great deal seems to have been written about Tyrone...)" 1
