John and the Wierdest - Can't Get Over These Memories

Hi everybody,  There are two intros, as far as I can tell,  to John and the Wierdest, one with a Piano lead in, the other, just short drum roll and in.

What do folks know about these two different intros, is one a bootleg version, there was a good one (Bootleg) in the 9ts/early 2000's, which was dark brown to the light, or did it get originally realeased like this, was this a legit Radio edit?

Scan below shows running time 2.04, don't have another scan to compare to this one....

Any ideas?

Wasn't there a date stamp added to the boot to try to add extra provenance?

Think that came out early 2000's and is easily to tell from the original, the other boot from the 90's is a lookey-likey copy and the only way to tell is to hold up to a bright light and the vinyl is translucent dark brown

correct, thin flimsy brown vinyl that you could see through if you held it to the light and really shiny label

the boots from the 90's had a date stamp, the shiny label was a dead givaway too

So is the brown vinyl counterfeit copy from the 70's?

I have both.

The lookey-likey counterfeit, brown vinyl, identical labels to the original.

The date stamped copy is black vinyl.

So the 70's one (see through Brown Vinyl) has the full piano Intro. does anybody have an original with the short drum roll, then in, like this one in the below clip?

Yes, very distinctive difference when compared. Never knew that Malc.

The label used on that video looks like the most recent bootleg with the date stamp removed. The text is much smaller than the original/brown vinyl counterfeit. Weird (est)!

That's not to say the audio is from the label shown.

I can't play mine to compare as The Enemy has covered my decks in sewing stuff while we're decorating 🙄

Don't have deep enough pockets to own an original so no idea what intro that plays...

Certainly wasn't bootlegged in the 70's, if the boot is missing something probably because they didnt have real copy to copy from,my copy came from the only known hit on this record back in the mid 90's, 6-10 copies all unplayed from a San Francisco record shop

Yeah, having listened to them again, you could edit that intro at the drum roll quite easily... as I said, the see through Brown Vinyl one, the earliest boot of this does have the full piano intro.  I did think that bootleg was either later 9ts maybe early 2000s as it was discussed on here at the time.

My knowledge is limited, but the only time I came across this recording without the piano intro was on a Soul Supply CD a good few years ago. It may be that the audio on the YouTube video has come from this source.

Also, ‘Weirdest’ was spelled as ‘Wierdest’ on the original and on the most recent boot. The earlier boot from the 90s (early 2000’s?) had the correct spelling.

Ahhh. we may never know for certain, but that sounds very plausible doesn’t it?  booted form a CD. Do you know what the name of the CD was andy?

the non piano version is on the goldmine sevens reissue, a mastering cock up not a different version / take

so they cocked up and just started at the drum roll for the Sevens reissue.. It had to come from somewhere! I'm glad we have nearly got to the bottom of this, it's been bugging me for years!

I can’t remember right now, but it was definitely dubbed from a 45.

no, on the original 45 it starts with piano intro then drum roll then the vocal kicks in, on the sevens reissue you get the back end of the drum roll then vocal, somebody pressed the record button too late

I know Trev, I like that "somebody pressed the record button too late" it smacks of those cock ups that make record collecting so interesting. Love the Soul Supply guys, their LP's were essential, but there have been a few instances where the wrong track was laid next to the wrong title, Soul Incorporated on Emblem (Yellow and shield design) for instance on the 'Untouchables' LP... maybe that’s for another thread.

brown vinyl boot first reared its head in the mid 90's, a few people got there fingers burnt at the time

Before mid 90s mate, more like 90/91

No, they are all spelt incorrectly

Maybe I'm mistaken, then.

The image used on the Brico youtube upload from 2010 must have been digitally corrected.

You're right, they've also removed the date stamp

Ok, to finish this thread off, here is a scan of the 9ts boot of this, plus the flip... The date stamp thing is truly horrible, looks awful and it cuts or starts at the drum roll...so incomplete... not good

like most I'm not mad on boots, but sometimes you gotta get the best copy you can...

This is what the boot that Mal posted up looks like held up to a light bulb. That's not a reflection, that's looking through the vinyl. They must have dubbed it directly from a slightly worn original because you can hear light background noise as the music kicks in. The audio is nowhere near as clear & loud as an original, but the labels are quite close.
