Ruby Winters – Better – Diamond 230 M- £100

(In the immortal words of one of my Cumbrian mates, ‘I could listen to this till the cows come yam’. From the energetic horn blast intro, exquisite vocals and backing, subtle wafting horn throughout, what a record on a fabulous label. Well done Rene Hall, quality stuff)

Otis Brown – Find somebody new – Lujuna 10655 2A Ex £125

(The writer’s own version, and what a polished version it is, same as the growing ever more popular version by the Soulettes on Dud Sound, which when it peaks will see everyone scrabbling for the male version. Light pink label issue)

Spyder Turner – I can’t make it anymore / Don’t hold back – MGM 13692 DJ M- £85

(You can understand why this tidy double sider in either demo or stock format has occupied a pole position on the scene for so many years. Unbeatable Northern top side, and I bet its only the ready availability that stopped it being in the same big money league as the rarities. Demo is the must have)

Carol Anderson – It shouldn’t happen to a dog – Mid-Town 270 Ex+ £100

(Don’t let the title mislead you, its nowt to do with anything unfortunate befalling a Cockapoo, just a classy mid-tempo Detroit crossover dancer from the girl that gave us ‘Taking my mind off love’ and ‘Sad girl’. I’ve also had a thing for the flip ‘Holding on’. One Z. Hicks involved on both sides, is that Zerben of RCA fame?)

Brenda & Boys – I’m on the right track – Motor 765 M- £150

(2 Motown style dancers, with Brenda Holloway on vocals and production by Frank Wilson. Unofficial west coast release of only 50 copies from around 1995)

Willie Kendrick – Give me lots of lovin’ / You can’t bypass love – RCA 8947 M- £120

(Another pair of corkers from the wizards at Pied Piper, lovely black stock copy, just a very feint edge lift, DNAP)

Ronnie Rae and the Dynamics – Funky shuffle – R.J.R 702 M- £80

(Ignore the title, it’s got a funky edge and a tidy little dancer)

Soundbreakers – Trying to get back to you – Symbol WD M- 220 £125

(Catchy dancer out of Sue Records stable, sublime vocal lead and a mix of male and girl backing, lovely stuff and probably under the radar, not to be ignored)

Marv Johnson – Come on and stop – UA 617 Ex+ £100

(A fine artist to have been on the books of United Artists and Motown. Can’t believe the wealth of unreleased tracks that Berry let slip for commercial release. Strong hint of Latin on this pulsating Northern dancer, in great company alongside the likes of Doug Banks, David Coleman, Tommy Navarro, Tony Middleton, and stable mates the Wanderers, wow, what a captivating floor filler and wonderful style of Northern Soul)

Vernon Garrett – Angel doll – Venture 635 WD M- £75

(All the hallmarks of greatness, a Jobete (Motown) publishing, written by Hitsville legends Stevie Wonder and Clarence Paul. Unreleased stunner by the Temptations, another example of Berry’s fettling, why oh why oh why, but then Vern does a grand job and the girly back elevates his cover. Beautiful demo)

George Jackson – I found what I wanted – Verve 10658 E+ £80

(Such an understated crossover track from an artist with more than a dash of southern states tone to his voice, this soulful gem is as smooth as a baby’s bum)

IMG_E8031.thumb.JPG.11311857fae26104f0da1eb68b82e23f.JPG

Magicians – Is it all gone – Villa 704 M- £150

(Superb west coast soul group, one of several out of the brilliant ‘Villa’ stable. Very accomplished lead vocal, supported expertly by the harmonies backing. It will never escape the shadow of ‘Love, let’s try again’ but none the less, a cracking west coast dancer. Lovely copy, condition, condition, condition)
