Startones – Lovin’ you baby - Billie Fran 001 Ex £700

(My favourite source for Soul, Texas, offering yet another soul charger, which remains hard to turn up, especially in decent condition. One of many labels, and a very iconic design, owned by the magnate ‘Major Bill Smith’. Don’t think I’ve seen another release from them, so like many remain a bit of a mystery. Edge lift does not affect play)

O.C. Smith – On easy street – Columbia 43809 M- £150

(Sublime smooth soul dancer, rarer stock copy in lovely condition, sticker residue on flip label)

Tommy Navarro – I cried my life away – De-Jac 1253 M- £350

(As the Big City Soul YouTube video says, “Up there with the monsters, and so it is, an absolutely fabulous Latin tinged soul shuffler that gets the hair on the back of my neck up every time, spectacular label, bell sound stamped original)

Rufus Lumley – I’m standing – Holton 5001 M- £300

(Thumping dancer on the machine stamped original)

Volumes – The trouble I’ve seen / That same old feeling – Impact 1017 Ex+ £275

(Detroit double sider at its best, 2 top quality tracks by on the best Northern groups, on a rarer red stock copy)

Rose Battiste – Hit and run / I miss my baby – Revilot 204 WD Ex+ £500

(Detroit double header of epic proportions, can’t split these 2 sides, both equally good. A very tiny date in biro on ‘miss’ label. Plays and looks better than Ex+, just being conservative)

Chuck Wood – Seven days is too long – Roulette 4754 WD Ex+ £150

(Out and out dancer, thunderous tune that made for in car listening cruising the roads. Fabulous demo, slight wave on edge DNAP)

Fabulous Nu-Tones – Our love was destined to be – White House 5002 M- £450

(Re-released on the Swing City label for William “Smoke” Howard’s appearance at Prestatyn in 2009. The original is very hard to come by that’s for sure, and oddly references William as “Honey Dripper”, so maybe a change in career direction after this 1967 Memphis release. The flip’s slow and not up my street, but the top side, wow, we are entering uncharted territory with this superb under the radar male group dancer out of Memphis, its obscure but so familiar, kicking off with those high piano notes, almost the same lead in as the Fantastic 4’s “Can’t stop looking”, and the remainder is as good as many a male group rarity I’ve heard. Clean vinyl, labels and such a fresh accomplished sound. Gorgeous label logo. No picture sleeve which does exist. Saw that a copy was listed in 2013 for £350 Vg-)
