Dobber Posted October 3 Posted October 3 I wonder if tippi Saunders is in fact Yvonne Vaughn? tippi Saunders does a version of “when you gonna tell her” on trident from 1967 yvonne Vaughn “when you gonna tell her” on dot from 1965 however Yvonne Vaughn’s first 45 is called “ I’m sorry for hurting you” which happens to be the b side of the tippi Saunders 45….cant be a coincidence? Also both singers are/sound white maybe the trident copy was another attempt at success with a change in artist name? thoughts?
Tlscapital Posted October 4 Posted October 4 (edited) Different singers IMO. Heard the Tippi Saunders and I truly didn't like it. Sounded too weak to me in comparison. Beyond the musical re-mastering even... Mind you Yvonne is clearly a white singer as it's Donna Fargo first pseudo. Yvonne Vaughn on DOT dates from June 1965. Donna Fargo first 45 is from 1967. Tippi Saunders 45 on Trident would be dating from 1967 or after 1966 apparently. A previous Trident release by Lowell Farmer with 'Lonely Girl' re-uses Yvonne's flip side 'Lonely Little Girl' backing track... That was also re-used for a Chattahoochee 45 after and another L.A.P. obscure other thing... Backing track that was recorded first in 1964 with the 'Wreckin Crew' bassist Ray POHLMAN ! So it seems that re-using Yvonne / Donna Dot backing tracks gear was a thing at Trident. Edited October 4 by Tlscapital 2
Billy Jo Jim Bob Posted October 4 Posted October 4 Forgot all about this record as it’s not really my thing. Had a listen to both and to my untrained ears definitely different vocalists. Looking at Wiki for Yvonne / Donna and it’s very country music focused. As for the backing tracks, having researched for several articles on various artists, what comes across is that the sixities music scene was a time of creativity and there were lots of connections developed up and down the US. Musicians, writers, producers etc moving around and working across genres. I would guess the connection is with writers / producers etc, but have no evidence of this to be fair. If you have the 45’s maybe worth checking ? 1
Tlscapital Posted October 4 Posted October 4 Not much to add or tell appart if ever with both next to each one another. Just the Billy Page composer connection and the BMI but that's about that for the WYGTHAM' side. Then evidently the composers and BMI are also respected for the 'Lonely Little Girl' flip side of Yvonne Vaughn done by Lowel Farmer on Trident. Still that don't point to a link... 1
Dobber Posted October 4 Author Posted October 4 Good work guys, and I reckon your correct that the the connection is that trident used the dot songs,no actual connection between the artists!
Dobber Posted October 4 Author Posted October 4 As far as the tune is concerned, the Yvonne version is cool and fairly rare! But I lean more to the Tippi version, probably cos it’s shockingly rare! I notice soul mine has a copy for sale @ 1500 quid, and popsike only showing the one sale at 1800 quid!
