Little Roger Hatcher meeting over onder Dottys

This record is a top rare rnb Detroit session

firstly, I was after this for years

but after getting  a copy, it has now been made clear to me that there are two takes 

 two different mixes,  but  completely  different vocal  takes

two different label styles with two different takes

both top tunes

the dottys label without the dots gives up a straight rnb version with guitar up front

the dottys label with the dots gives up a more soulful version with different vocals and less guitar

 I have looked over this 45

Both these 45s are original Detroit 45s

only 5 of each versions ever sold on discogs  in 20 years so its a tune !

the first version is a straightforward rnb take with rnb guitar high in the mix

the second take is different, its more laid back, without the rnb guitar and very soulful with different vocals

Callum has and plays the tune

I love this tune

is it also on another release with a different flip ? I need you is great deep soul I used to have this 45.

Roger didn't really seem to be well served by his record companies, but then he could be a very difficult person to deal with.

Lots of his recordings down the years have proven to be difficult to get hold of. I guess he pissed off a lot of the bigger recording outfits & so had to make do with little indies & his own labels to get his tracks out.

UK Expansion put out a comp album on him many moons ago (The Roger Hatcher Collection) & I was tasked with getting his bio from him to go in the CD release's booklet. To say he was obstructive to my approaches would be an understatement. In the end, Lou Ragland (who knew him) had to read him the riot act to get him to cooperate with my task.

I believe Expansion had a few problems in their dealings with him too, after their album was released.

Great stuff

so he was a proper pain in the arse

fair play .

So the dottys 45 has  2 pressing runs  I presume they were trying to push “I need you” 

I wonder how 2 completely different takes of the b side ended up being released 

I thought I would post this as there is nothing online referencing these different takes

I don't think it was just him, his family are difficult to deal with as well.

Around 20 years ago I posted Stormy Love Affair on my YouTube channel, it was on there for about 10 years, before one of his family accused me of making money off of this recording and threatened to sue.
