Classic Compilation Soul Albums with DJ Sleeve Notes

There's been loads of northern soul compilations over the years. A couple of tracks just came up on my feed which reminded of the RCA Jumping at the Go Go album. Can we try and get a list of decent albums with DJ sponsored sleeve notes. You get the gist - I hope. I think this is a bit of a monster album - was it 1978/9?

These lp’s were the start of everything for me,casino classics 1 and 2 got played to death,not so much 3! The soul supply lp’s are simply superb! Then onto the Kent lp’s which are legend! And of course inbetween all them you have rca and grapevine lp’s

From  me would be Rate Soul uncovered 3, with notes from Dave Flynn, and the Essential Detroit LP from goldmine with all those great label scans on the front.  Notes were a bit thin on the vinyl release, CD got better notes and more tracks. 
 

The Sound of Detroit, double lp from goldmine,  under the street lamp from goldmine,  Black music is our business from Kent.

Sold on Soul

They don't have sleeve notes attributed to a DJ ... BUT it's very hard to ignore the 'Bell's Cellar Of Soul' comp LP's from 1968/69. The 'tribute' album to the series that Charly put out in 89 did however have notes by Rob Hughes. 

EMI put out lots of other great soul comp LP's in the 60's / 70's but usually the sleeve notes were about the artists / tracks on the albums (though some were penned by DJ's). LP's such as .... A Quartet of Soul; Soul Supply, Soul Sixteen, An Album Full of Soul; Sweet Soul Sounds.

They also put out more in the 80's ('What's Happening Stateside' etc.) but don't recall if these had notes by DJ's.

The ABC Out On The Streets Again was my first album that had out and out Northern Soul on it as oppose to Motown. Other than the ones already mentioned wasn't there a Record Collector album with notes from Kev Roberts? I seem to recall there was a Pie International album too with Scepter/Wand stuff that had sleeve notes?

First dozen Kent LPs were pretty special. Special mention for 'On the Soul Side' and 'Floorshakers'.

I've a few Keb Darge inspired cd's - one of them is an absolute stonker! But doh, I can't think of the title - it escapes me now.

The one I have in mind has the Del Larks - Job Opening and Tony Fox's - Love, Let Love and Be Loved and loads of other top sides on. 

Very decent man that Mr Darge.

That's the one. There is a similar Goldmine one called This is Northern Soul GSCD14 with different tracks and a small Tim Brown write up. For me the Kent CD's take some beating for sleeve notes like Wishes, LA Happening and Old Town and Barry Souls Stirrers. The Joe Boy mini CD five tracks leading with Dearly Beloved and ending with Johnny Maestro. Also has an good write up presented by Ginger.

Jumping At The Go Go was my first soul compilation, then a load of early Kent Albums "Floorshakers" and "Footstompers" being the most memorable.

Got "All Nite Long - WVON ✩ F.M. Chicago" at Stafford and could only dream of owning the originals as a teenager.

This was a good album - pretty much Richard Searling's playlist circa 1981. Always some debate about the legitimacy of it - I believe it's a boot. There was some debate on here years ago as to who did it. Came from Tomorden I think.

A few more for your list:-

The PRT/Nightmare album The Motor Town Sounds of Detroit has extensive sleeve notes by author Sharon Davis. The album has lots of Levine credited songs on it. I need a magnifying glass to read them on mine lol.

A couple of my Sounds Superb albums the ones with unissued Motown tracks also have extensive sleeve notes The Supremes "Baby Love and Stevie Wonder's "Uptight" but no indication who wrote the notes.

If it's your bag (modern) the Soul Togetherness albums too. Richard's write up on the back of the 2004 album cover being another in-depth write up.

I've just grabbed this one out too Soul Supply's late 80's The Northern Soul Story double album Vol 5. Not great sound quality but in-depth sleeve notes. There is lots of these with rare tracks on.

I have one of those (sleeves) but I think the tracks on the L.p were different to the sleeve, (to get round copyright) i think it was reissued in 1988 with totally different tracks again with an insert,

sorry about the pics I dont know how to edit them to get them the right way

That's the "re-issue" that's not a reissue. A totally different compilation that happens to use the same sleeve as the "original"

I assume the person who put out the first one had more covers printed than LPs pressed and decided to use them up on the second album , with a different rear tracklist simply stuck on the cover.

Strange that you can buy it on Discogs as it's obviously a bootleg.

Yes it's definitely a bootleg. It's also strange that we did a thread, or it came up as part of another thread, but no one ever really said who did the WVON. Lots of nods and winks, but no actual name. I still don't know who put it out.

It was a damn good compilation; boot or not. I'm not sure that there will be that many that still exist - I could be wrong about all of that.

First comp I ever bought would have been Capitol soul casino, from record shop in Leigh, no sleeve note if I remember then loads of Kent comps after that, favourite one would be Essential Modern Soul with great sleeve notes from Kev Roberts, great tunes from Daybreak, Garfield Fleming, Charles Johnson , great album bought it off one of the bouncers at Bradford queens hall and still play it today

The Professionals seems like an odd record to be in with the rest of the tracks. It's a fantastic record, in very strange company.

Never seen this one before.
