Not to blow this thread in a different direction, but on unreleased acetates and all that, I have a list below that I have MP3's on,  with no info as to who, where etc... maybe folks can fill in the blanks? If they are / have been Butch spins,  cool....

Lebaron Strings - I Have Faith In You (inst) This acetate was sold by Mick Smith well over a decade ago, I missed out on it, but its the same as Doni Burdick as far as I can tell.

Vivian Carroll - Oh Yeah Yeah (long intro) - I guess the orig cut, the 45 got the shortened to a radio edit?

Jimmy Bishop Trio - If You Can't Be True - nothing on this what so ever.

Clay Fulton - One Hundred Years (Unreleased) - no idea, good though

Jimmy Sherman - My Heart's Wide Open - no idea, good though

Charlotte O'Hara - The Touch Of Venus - dreadful version, but interesting none the least...

Billy Vera - People That's Why - version of Idle Few, great record, maybe Billy was in the Idle Few?

Shane Martin - I Don't Want To Talk About It - lack lustre version of Nancy Aimes

Little Charles & The Sidewinders - Win Your Love

Dee Dee Sharp - I'll Do Anything He Wants Me To

And the biggies for me, this is brilliant, The Skyliners - All The Time acetate, and Detroit Rhythm Section - Backstreets, which was a Guy Hennighan spin for sure, does he still have that?

Malc

** if I might, also, De-Lites - Lover (alt version) that I think Pete Smith saw this on Ebay, years and years ago, he managed to grab the MP3, hense we all got it, but the acetate, I wonder who got that, did it end up in the uk or Stateside, or Europe?

Hi Mal, nice post some great acetates, I’ve got the Little Charles Win Your Love acetate. Fabulous tune.

I can imagine you're right. In 1978 I was chatting to Dave Raistrick in the Casino record bar (about records, would you believe). He pulled out a record from his dj box and asked me if I knew it; it was Johnny James on Circle M.  I'd never seen it before.  Dave always had great records around that period.

yes, the empires was Dave's at the Stafford niters.

The New wanderers-this man in love-Ready was played late Wigan, by Richard S.   Is that what you're referring to Chalks?  The 'aint gonna do you know harm' came later, post Wigan.

Now the Delites is a proper record. Has been in my favourites since my formative all niter days - circa 1979. First heard played at Derby Assembly Rooms all niter I think.

Jesse James "Love is alright"  I first heard him play it at Cleethorpes, instant dancefloor mayhem.

I believe a couple more acetates turned up later both alt takes.

Yes I believe soon after playing it,  the usual dodgy characters made a few trips to Hobbycraft to manufacture their own replicas.

Delites AMS acetate:   different production;  doesn't have the back-ground clapping/tambourines that runs right through the song.  And the backing singers input is less than on the Cuppy version.

Yet to be mentioned is the fantastic Rita & the Tiaras - Out of your life c/u.

Along with Chuck Jackson & Jean Carter, these would be my top three.

I bought the Rita & tiaras c/u from Andy Dyson.  He had a copy too.   I think he called it the Shalimars. I was playing all over Britain and Europe at the time, every weekend, also unlikely places like Japan, so it was relatively easy to break records.

Joseph Webster:   a very few copies turned up in the early 80s and I was able to get one on a US record trip. I was playing mainly 6ts in my spots for the first 20 years, so JW with many other Modern tunes remained in my collection. The few other people that got a copy of JW did give it a few spins during the late 80s, but had little impact (places like Thorn) It wasn't until just before 2000 did it get some plays at the all-nighters/weekenders and became a monster tune. Keb and I began playing it and before long it was massive. Soul Sam heard me playing it at some venue and managed to get a copy from Ted. I think Ted realised he'd made a mistake when he found out I was spinning it.

Too bloody right Mark and Sam didn't know it until he heard you play it. He asked John Weston if he knew who had one and John mentioned me from that moment Sam nagged me for weeks.  I had bought it of Rod Dearlove for 500 quid, i eventually got one back from the States and unfortunately it was in the stolen ones. This is the label scan so easily recognizable unless its been turned into something else label wise JosephWebster.thumb.jpg.2a7ee542ce8ce4138f2653f89d5b7297.jpg

I heard Andy playing it before Sam.  I know Guy said he got a copy of the label owners in the early/mid 80s, but only played the instrumental flip.

I first heard it in roughly 1986 from Steve Kilgour who put me on to dozens of great records. I believe he bought it from Guy for £2.00!

Marc, I think you've mistaken the 'look on my face' episode.  It wasn't because I heard someone else playing the United Sounds, it was sitting there, contemplating listening and suffering an hour or so of Gospel !!

Well, lets just agree it was late in the night.. 😉 Late in that very night when this got uncovered which of course would have given you all the rights in the world to look a bit surprised.

Greg got his copy years before from pestering the former owner for years at a drive in so he told me laters.

Fun fact: Someone took a picture of that very moment when Greg played it that night - its somewhere on fb

Me too, absolutely love it, though interestingly audio on Youtube much slower than when Mark plays it out, so presumably he pitches it up a good bit - didn't occur to me until I heard the audio. Pitching up or down always strikes me as a bit of a dark art

Thanks Mark for the wonderful music over many years.

I was wondering if you've still got most of them in your collection or have you parted with some as they became uncovered or more readily available.

This thread just sums up the quality of the rare scene for me, what it's all about.

Memories of  great nights dancing / listening to this stuff,

When did you first play the mighty lovers c/up Mark? Probably my favourite record ever

I always thought it was an acetate, if it’s a cover up, it must be incredibly rare to remain undiscovered for so long. 😮

Add in the two Edna McGriff ~ Been Hearing About You acetates…

And I think, Darrell banks - knocking at your door? There are a few of those all different cuts of the same song, Richard Searling has one for sure.

different version of Ann Haywood on Hondo, and he used to spin a real fast track at the 100 club, with a kinda Latin break, can’t remember the name, it’s on Jet Set records…

Jimmy Castor

Can I add Intentions c/u (Les Watson & Panthers - Pompei)
