Mike Posted August 15 Posted August 15 had the below sent in to site, so passing it on..... Hi folks, I wanted to let you know about a new project - a set of brand new never-heard-before soul songs with a vintage Motown / Northern Soul feel, generated using AI tools. "AI Got Soul" is an experiment to explore whether Artificial Intelligence, a machine without feelings or a heartbeat, could create something as deeply emotional and joyfully vibrant as soul music. I'll leave it up to you to decide if it was successful, but the results are certainly interesting! There's more explanation on the website: https://aigotsoul.com/ We've also posted tracks on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@AIGotSoul-Channel Hope you enjoy! Paul
Thinksmart Posted August 15 Posted August 15 (edited) There can be no such thing as AI 'Soul music', it is evident why from the name it has. It could adequately reproduce the sound, but that doesn't make it Soul music in any way as the humanity and lived experience it expresses cannot be delivered that way. I'm open to AI in other areas of my life and other styles of music, but not in this area. It's a complete anathema, a false premise. We don't even accept people trying to do Soul music easily who are just fans of the music, these come and go then fade away. There's a difference between the sound and the feel. In a world of technology, it will be the humanity, emotions and feelings we remember - so it's even more important that Soul music truly reflects life as lived, or aspired to be - at least for my own enoyment of it. I simply don't have a need for AI Soul music, when there is a world of real music to discover, including that being made today that I'm still purchasing from contemporary and emerging artists. I don't mind electronics in music at all, it's the human intent and expression that matters for it to be something I choose to engage with. Edited August 15 by Thinksmart 2
Woodbutcher Posted August 15 Posted August 15 Having just , for some strange reason , subjected myself to the first three seconds of the monstrosities on that YT channel I have to ask why the owner/administrator of this fine site dedicated to soul music would give this shite time of day and post it up. To me it's nothing short of trolling and I'd expect better of the powers that be to be honest.
Mal C Posted August 15 Posted August 15 Dreadful, in fact the first track says it all, 'Haunted by You' !

I suppose its only redeeming feature is that it at least proves without a shadow of a doubt that AI has a very , very long way to go ...

The robot must have had an ear to the keyhole of that recent 'UK Only' thread featuring a multitude of similar soulless pop stuff . 1
Twoshoes Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Pretty much an epic fail after listening to a snippet of each tune, very much a one trick pony in this instance, devoid of any soul whatsoever. Thinksmart pretty much nailed it. 1

If a song is good has great soulful vocals and a strong melody I think many would find it hard to resist. I'm not saying AI is there yet, but as today's artists have proved year on year they cannot produce the golden studio sound of the past, that many on the soul scene hanker for, such as the funk brothers in the Motown studio before they moved the setup to L.A. I think AI will enable this in the future. I'm old enough to remember the constant arguments in the back pages of Black Echoes where fans would argue over what should be classed as a newie and Mr M's oldies and whether we should accept tunes from the 1970s etc etc. Now we even accept songs from the 90s into the classic soul scene! Remember many say it won't belong before AI will have surpassed us in intelligence so why is it unthinkable they won't be able to produce soul music?
