Another "What Have You Learnt Today"

Well i've just learnt today that i shouldn't overlook a million seller b-side.

Arthur Conleys "Sweet Soul Music" has "Let's Go Steady" on the flip and it came up random on my Itunes. I thought this is great, i need to look for one. It sounded familiar to something else then I realised it's just about the same as Willie Hutch's "Let's Try It Over Again" on RCA.

I know Brenton Woods hit "Gimme Little Sign" has a good b-side also. Anymore suprisingly good B-sides of hits ?

I’d never flipped Brenton Wood so pleasantly surprised-great tune. Try flipping Earl Harrison Humphrey Stomp an Billy Stewart Secret Love. Not million sellers but great flips imo. Cheers Dave

A nice version by Arthur Conley - but Willie Hutch takes some beating.  Nice version of Phil Flowers - 'Another sleepless night' from the album Our man in Washington - by the Mellow Fellows on the flip of 'My baby needs me'.  Not sure which came first but they are both on Dot so that is probably the link.

Either way you want to look at it but Tyrone Davis 'Can I Change My Mind' was on all of its USA Dakar pressings a 'B' side. In June 1968 prior being picked up by the Cotillion group for National distribution and so rereleased in November 1968 with the fantastic bluesy growler 'A Woman Needs To Be Loved' pressed as the ORIGINAL 'A' side ! Even though as soon it was re-released by the Cotillion Group the radios PLUGGED the 'Can I Change My Mind' side !

My favorite million seller soul 45 ! Most other countries pressings then followed the move to put 'Can I Change My Mind' as the 'A' side like the UK Atlantic one. Not a Million Seller as such but a big 'evergreen' classic with a similar case dating from 1962 is Wilson Picket's first solo 45 on Correctone that first had 'My Heart Belongs To You' for 'A' side with the radio's pushing 'Let Me Be Your Boy' for PLUG side making it another change of fate 'B' side swapper.

Then for a real 'B' side worth mentioning here as an early early days 'cheap as chips' home spin Million Seller soul 45 is The Intruders 'Turn The Hands Of Time' on the flip of 'Cowboys To Girls'. Second in my book comes The Impressions 'My Woman's Love' on Curtom. Which for all the 'rare' sweet and deep soul lovers out there is an evident beginners 45. Flip of the 'This Is My Country' HIT side. Mind you back then the Uniques Jamaican cut I knew first.

I won’t share the title, as I can’t remember it just now, and don't have the 45 to hand, but if you have ‘Donnie Burkes - Satisfaction Guaranteed’ on Decca, flip it over, you won’t be disappointed, it’s a really good track

Great track. Interestingly penned by Lou Reed and John Cale (pre- Velvet Underground). The All Night Workers also recorded it, but Downliners Sect did the ultimate version of it in my opinion.

Great song! The full title is "Its the magic in you girl" by the band Steam. I dug more into it and can confirm it was recorded and released in November 1969.

Recently was given the book and do take some 'factual' quotes from it for facts but few others are just not thorough right. Have already pointed out few. Like that one on here where he misses the point that Dakar was first independent before being picked up by the Cotillion Group for national distribution through their pressings plants partnership. And this is crucial to realize how this record's faith came out to be significantly different  a second time around.

There's no mention of this first local self distributed small Dakar output in Robert Pruter's book... Knowing that Tyrone Davis 'a woman needs to be loved' for national distribution was re-pressed some 4 months later at least brings another light as to how 'can I change my mind' came to be PLUGGED by Houston, Texas Radio Dee-Jay 'Wild Child'. That without such further's 'exposition' through larger promotion and distribution would likely not have been.

Tim, 'CICMM' was released as the b-side of the a-side 'A woman needs to be loved. Then "Wild Child" & "Bugaloo George" began playing the b-side...that's how it took off.

Stated that in my first post and second post Ken. Just being more specific on releases.

My point being the switch for PLUG side with the second release for national distribution.

Dakar 1452 June 1968 for local distribution AND Dakar 602 November 1968 for national distribution

Back in the 80's, I was a guest on Richard Searling's Radio Hallam radio show. We were chatting & he mentioned he'd be playing Bud Harper's "Let Me Love You". I'd had a UK copy of Bud's "Mr' Soul" since it was big here in 1966. Haven't got a copy of that I told him, I've only got his "Mr Soul".   ...  DOHH 

BUT in my defence, I'd only had the 45 for around 17 years.

Loved ‘Let’s try it over again’ since Richard S used to spin it late 80’s / early 90’s but had no idea it was a cover - also have Sweet Soul Music on a 45 but never played the flip

Looking through the charity book stall in our local Morrisons, & came across this book by an author that I have read many times ' Carpetbaggers ' etc flipped it to read the theme of the book and no one ever mentioned this fact to me , Joey Heatherton , Hollywood Movie Star ,sex symbol etc plus Singer of the classic Casino tune , " When You Call Me Baby " amazing !
