A hidden pocket of joy in Manchester's Yes club
written by Jodie Edwards
This incredible Northern soul night is as unique and vibrant as the people who attend. The atmosphere at a Deptford northern soul night is unpalpable. Everyone who comes is here to have a great time and dance the night away, with feelgood soul music on spin and friendly faces on the dance floor.
The YES Club
YES is one of Manchester's newest and unique music venues. It is only a quick 5-minute walk from Oxford Road and is becoming a popular addition to the vibrant nightlife of Manchester.
YES opened in 2018, by the independent company behind venues such as The Deaf Institute and Gorilla. The venue is home to four different floors. With a rooftop bar and even a basement venue. This helps cater for many unique styles without taking anything away from the personality of the building.
The Night (no pun intended)
Besides intensely dancing away, the atmosphere of the northern soul night is so welcoming and never unfriendly. People are respectful and inclusivity is all that matters. This strong sense of community is something that can be felt as soon as you step through the doors. Strangers becoming friends as you bond over your shared love of the music.
The music played is another reason as to why this northern soul night brings so much happiness to people. These soulful melodies and fast-beating rhythms can lift spirits and leave an impressionable smile on your face. The energy here is so contagious alongside the passion that the DJs bring.
What makes Deptford northern soul club so special?
Deptford northern soul club is well known across the soul scene for its unique venues and just plain authenticity. Despite the crowd being much younger, the passion is still as strong. They have previously played sets at festivals such as Glastonbury and Green man, as well as being due to play at Kendal calling this summer.
These soul nights have an incredibly open audience that welcomes new listeners and even people of all ages. Who all come to have a great night.
One of the best parts of the night is the focus on vinyl only music. Dancing the night away to your favourite song spinning on the decks is something to make you truly feel alive. The nostalgia that comes with the crackling vinyl is what makes it truly so special. It only adds to the ambience of this incredible evening.
The incredible DJs
If Deptford's fantastic duo of Will Foot and Lewis Henderson was not enough for the night, they were joined by Manchester's own Northern grooves. We were treated to tracks by Stormy, Thee sacred souls and even The Salvador's.
The idea that there is a mix of contemporary, crossover and especially classic soul records really reflects the audience of today's northern soul nights. The contrast of the newer generation dancing to older music is what is so captivating.
The people who attend these nights are a diverse yet extremely enthusiastic crowd. Who all come from different walks of life but are united by a love for Northern Soul Music.
Overall, this night is an incredible experience for anyone who appreciates good music and bouncing dance floors. The amazing dancing and positive atmosphere are what makes these nights so memorable.
We left that night with sore feet but a full heart!
