Guest MARTIN SNOW Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Ever been in a shop or another location and been surprised at what you were hearing ? In Redhill, hardly the home of funk, last year I had two such experiences : Woolworths : Kleeer - Get Tough ! Marks and Spencers : Kurtis Blow - Christmas Rapping ! Any offers ? Martin Snow
Guest garv Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 I was shopping in Next in Ealing Broadway a few summers back & " cool jerk" came blasting out of the tannoy system, turns out the area manager was a soul boy & had a cd he insisted on playing when visiting his stores.Never got a chance to meet him but the girl behind the jump said " we hide all the good stuff when we know he`s coming" ....... mind you she had more metal in her face than Steptoe`s yard.

Lee Bates Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 I was in Tallin, the capitol city of Estonia in winter last year, sitting at a bar enjoying a pint when on came Ace Spectrum "Don't send nobody else." I thought I was hearing things! Had to ask the bar maid if somebody in the house was into soul....she didnt have a clue what I was on about!

Martin Snow Last year I was working in Fredrikshafen in Germany on the first day at dinner time in the works canteen "Tough Girl" & "Compared to what" came on in the background to say I was surprised is a understatement then I found out that a Guy from the British Army was working there on a tank gear box, He had been there for the last month and had asked the manageress to play his Northern CD for him. The best part was my boss hated soul he was into heavy rock and on the way down he was telling me about all the shit he likes being played all the time in Germany. Steve J

Sebastian Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 (edited) Nearly fell off my chair a couple of times when I was in Barcelona some months ago as I heard quite a lot of "accidental" soul. Off the top of my head, I heard Dorando's "Didn't I" in the background while eating tapas at some random restaurant and then while drinking some mojitos at some random bar I heard Silvetti's "Spring Rain" blasting in the background... Was a bit surprised. Edited March 18, 2007 by Sebastian
Tony Turner Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 In a shopping centre in Borneo or Malaysia hearing a lot of local music then on came Doris Troy-I'll Do Anything!!!!! Then back to local music. soulAdequateNP Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Just under 10 years ago now, walking past the New World pub (as it was then) in Worksop and...hey this sounds familiar....it's James Bounty - Prove Yourself A Lady! Wow, thinks me, I'll pop in here...turns out one of the regulars had brought a Northern tape in and in doing so had sparked my journey back onto the scene
Robin S Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 Walking with Pete Shirley from Derby City Centre to Pride Park to see Foxes take on Derby, we were amused to hear "The Joker" blasting out of a pub....we had a look in...and the pub was empty with no one at all to be seen - very surreal... Best buzz was hearing probably one of my fave record of the last 3/4 years in a shop at Dalton Park Outlet nr Sunderland recently...The Superimposers "Would It Be Impossible". Taken from a Jazzanova comp Cd "Secret Love vol 1" I was very surprised..

Codfromderby Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 many years ago whilst travelling around, i found myself in a bar in a remote part of morocco, on the juke box in amongst the local faves was "and get away" by the esquires, i put in the required amount and heard the track amongst the camels and sand, as a side track to this not to far a way from this bar was a shop advertising swarfega,
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Hasn't there been Northern played in TK Maxx and Mattalhan like Ann Sexton - You've Been Gone to Long it's not something we expect to hear.
Guest MARTIN SNOW Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 (edited) as a side track to this not to far a way from this bar was a shop advertising swarfega, I sincerely hope this isnt yet another anal sex reference, there was enough of them on here last week ! Edited March 19, 2007 by MARTIN SNOW

Guest Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Walked into a little bar last week in the city ( ¥rhus in Denmark ) and they were playing The Buckinghams "Don`t you care " The place was full of drunken eskimos dancing to it !!!!! Freaked me out anyway.

Codfromderby Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 at the blessington carriage, a student type pub in derby pub the other week ,in between the thrash metal and indie stuff appeared boogaloo party the flamingoes, love love love bobby hebb and tell me its just a rumour by the isleys. the long haired student types just carried on jumping about as if it was any other record, i just stood on the edge of the dance floor feeling very old
Catriona Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Hasn't there been Northern played in TK Maxx and Mattalhan like Ann Sexton - You've Been Gone to Long it's not something we expect to hear. The local TK Max is a Mecca (groan) of all tunes soul related. Yesterday they had my son s fav Bobby Womack,Across 110th street , Alton Mclain and Destiny and some Marvin Gaye. It worked as well because I stayed in there long enough to consider buying something...but then I changed my mind. Someone with a degree in marketing has worked out the 40 something soul lover should have a disposable income to spend on reduced designer wear and is creating a happy shopping ambience for us which is nice isnt it?
Bitchdj Posted March 24, 2007 Posted March 24, 2007 well me and the lad just popped into the local newsagents martins to buy a water pistol ( dont ask its a long story ) when we both burst into song as timi yuro-it'll never be over for me blared out over the tannoy closely followed by arethas - you make me feel like a natural woman.......followed by....the bangles ... cookie

I told Mrs G about this thread and suggested we check out TK Maxx. We were in for less than 10 minutes and caught (sandwiched between two unexceptional rnb tracks) Moses Smith - Girl Across The Street. Is there something we haven't been told? Godz

Guest MARTIN SNOW Posted March 29, 2007 Posted March 29, 2007 GOT TO ASK THIS KARL, IS THAT YOU SHAVING IN THE PIC BECAUSE THE MORE I LOOK AT IT THE MORE IT LOOKS LIKE THE LATE JOHN PEEL TO ME ?
Guest MBarrett Posted March 30, 2007 Posted March 30, 2007 Appreciate this isn't RARE RARE soul but I was in a restaurant a while back and out of nowhere they played the whole Otis Blue album. I was choking on my food - said to my colleagues - "Do you realise what this is!!??" Of course they neither knew nor cared. I just opened it up on Amazon.co.uk to get a few "30 second fixes". They have as Track 4 - Down in the ALLEY!! Makes an otherwise tender song sound quite GRUBBY. MB
