Citizen P Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Meself and Steve was having a natter about some of the stuff that first got us interested way back when. You know things like, Chain of Fools, Love Man , I got what it takes, I thank You , Funky Street, Top of the Stairs etc. etc and more Motown than you can throw a brick at. We thought we might give a night a go spinning this kinda stuff. Think it'll go.?? Tony
okehgaz Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Thought about running something like this myself. This, for me at any rate, was what got me into the music in the first place. Reaction when i've talked about it with others was mixed. General feeling was that i might work as a one off thing but not on a too regular basis. I think it might but who knows.... Others felt that because everyone has these tracks at home (not sure they do anymore) so when they go out they want to hear something different. Some thought that it would appeal more to non-northern crowd I've mixed Otis, Wilson, James Brown, etc in northern spots and it works ok locally but it's not something i've tried outside of my comfort zone Personally i'd love to see it ..... keep me informed
Citizen P Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 We weren't planning it ti be every month, probably every couple or three Tony
Makemvinyl Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 (edited) What I was brought up on and a way to get todays youngsters involved if we can apeal to them We still play club soul at Northern venues we just call it Northern Classics and link it to the Wheel and Catacombs and Dungeon and Bowling Green depends on where you play and live Yes if in my area would love it and would enjoy getting involved and if I could help would Doug HallMIRACLES.BMP Edited March 16, 2007 by MAKEMVINYL
Funky Si Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I think it is essential if we are going to keep the rare soul scene going that we start getting new people into soul in general. The most accessible music back then is still a great place to start & there are lots of people who have hardly heard any soul at all. Just look at how popular the KFC ads (& the LEvis ads going back a few years) are. One of the down sides of the rare soul world is the "you can't play that - it was a hit" rule. Great dancefloor soul is what it is all about to me & if that means mixing Chain of Fools, Move On Up, Roadrunner and the like into a set than I think that's great! That's what I do (when I get the chance) - so if you're looking for DJs for such a night, I am definitely up for it!

Sorry I can't remember which venue, if it comes back to me, I'll post it up. Seemed to work well though. Personally I think its a great idea, time-scales might be a bit difficult to work out though. Maybe once or twice a year? Winnie:-)
Guest ruffsounds Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 I do 3 a year playing Motown/Stax/Atlantic and all the other 60s soul, it's supposed to be a Reunion do for all the old Mods and Skins but i have all kinds turning up, according to the door counter we used last time we had 286 people thru the doors this will be the 5th year i have been doing it and always get a great turnout plus it makes a change to hear some of the stuff being played. Iv'e even met people i went to school with and hung around with 35 to 40 years ago and its great for old friends meeting who have not seen each other in years, one lad comes all the way back from South Africa everytime and says he would'nt miss them. So give it a go you might be suprised at the response but dont just aim it at the N/S crowd. cheers Ruffsounds
Guest sausalito Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 It certainly an interesting diversion from the Northern/Modern Norm Went to the Atlantic/STAX show 'SWEET SOUL MUSIC' held recently at the Halifax Victoria Theatre that is currently touring the country - Check Outwww.flyingmusic.com The numbers were around 400 from a possible 1,200 (I was reliably informed), which seemed such a shame (dunno what the numbers around the country have/will be) for what turned out to be a fantastic nights entertainment. I only saw the add for the show by accident myself so I guess it's all about getting the word on the streets! Check the show out when it's in your area and maybe leave a few flyers. Good Luck If you Decide to try your hand
Citizen P Posted March 16, 2007 Author Posted March 16, 2007 Yes my wife to this at Tameside Hippodrome and loved it! Now she's not really into Northern but likes some of the 60's stuff. We are not intending it to be another Northen Night, just as has been said stir some memories and play some stuff that doesn't get out much nowadays. We are looking at a room that could have come straight from "Life On Mars". Any tips for tunes gratefully received. ATB Mr. Pitiful
Guest Bogue Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 (edited) You will probably get a damn sight more bodies turning up than a lot of the Northern only nights do Rob Hurcomb, 'stillsoulin' on here & 'Lloydee' do a similar thing every few months round here at The Abbey Hotel Malvern, though not just restricted to 60's. It's sells out between 300/400 in advance tickets every time ! So go for it i say Edited March 16, 2007 by Bogue
hipshaker 05 Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 we play some of this type stuff to non northern crowds and it goes down a storm ...... for many i guess there is a bit of a recognition even if they don't completely know the tracks. and many of the tracks will appeal to new people for exactly the same reasons they appealed to you .... because they are good, catchy tunes. not sure about your proper "northern crowds" though.

Am going to this show on sunday night down here in Bournemouth.Should be interesting numbers wise as we've just started soul night at local uni. Will try to leave some flyers around and see if anyone turns up. Dave.
Guest WPaulVanDyk Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 some of these tracks are simple Northern anyway so they should get spun at your normal Northern soul night ie motown songs This Old Heart of Mine, I Can't Help Myself. we use to get played here a lot of Ain't To Proud to Beg in which most consider it to be commercial soul/motown
