ImberBoy Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Having lived in ze land of the Bratwurst for the last 11 years you'd kinda expect that I'd be well versed in the German Northernsoul Scene, well I kinda aren't. I mainly plumped for their "Scootering" scene, and it seamed as if the two "Cults" where a bit like oil and water? Of course there where some crossing, over but certainly not on the scale as in the UK with folks seamlessly enjoying the tastes of both camps. (Never been on a Scooter Rally? You'll love it, camping with hooligans) Now I know John Buck ventured over to Berlin some years ago and I have heard that the initial reports on the night where a little "fluffed up" to say the least? The night was an almighty flop? I have been to a few "Do's" over the years, some ok other dia fookin bolical! The thing is that you can have a realy fookin good time over there! The real question is would I go back? Well the answer is definitely yes!! Who has been over before? I know Terry Davis, Nige Brown, Dave Rimmer, Eddy Pillar and Keb Darge have been across but who else? Is any one planning to go this year? When, where and can I come? Here are a few write ups I did on the German northernsoul scene, some have been published in Manifesto, have a read, it's my personal take on their take on our scene, comments welcomed. Although I'm playing Modern rather than Northern, check out https://www.myspace.com/uptight_frankfurt for more details. Consists of three evenings worth of Soul and an all-nighter on the saturday. Should be a top weekend.

macca Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 the bamberg do sounds really groovy. I think I'm gonna have to spread my wings, though if I do, it'll be to italy first, to one of roccia's events. this international soul scene is the dog's gonads in my opinion. my calender this year reads madrid in may, gij³n in august & valencia in october, all in this country admittedly, but they're pretty damned good here too, steve g & tony smith can vouch for that. Done Cologne twice, Munich loads of times, Frankfurt a couple of times, Nurnberg - what a weekend as well as djing at a Rocksteady Night at the same venue in Nurnberg - that was AMAZING - totally rammed and all dancing to Alton Ellis, Heptones, Sugar Minott, Jackie Opal etc etc - respect to Ozi Celik for organising that. Was going to be doing the Baltic Weekender but had a few hiccups so had to decline...but Mr Rimmer will report back with all the goings on DJ'd in Austria, Spain, France and Italy as well and all have fabulous soul events all with slightly different variations on a soul theme....bugger the carbon foot prints - get over there and have a Eurosoultastic time....you won't regret it Jo Edited March 15, 2007 by vinylvixen

Guest Andy BB Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 We're off to Aachen in Germany in a few weeks for a weekender (April 19th to 21st 2007) CASINO ROYALE - MOD/R'N'B WEEKEND It was the casino visit that got me hooked. Very civilised, that and the daily brunch. Can recommend Gijon too (Been to the Mod weekenders rather than the Soul ones there, but the town is really lovely). Oh well, back to packing my bags for ermm, Pontins in Prestatyn.

I'm from Germany and there are some others on here... It seems, that there are more and more soul events over here every year. The number of allnighters/weekenders is still growing as far as I can see. The longest running weekender is in Nuremberg, I think since 1989 under different promotions. It's also the busiest one, there are around 700 people at the K4 on the second weekend of december for years now. The longest running soul night / allnighter, as far as I know, is the Hip City Soul Club in Berlin run by Franz Heidl and Marc Forrest (both on this forum). Always top quality soul records spun there with an upfront attitude. Nearly every bigger city has it's soul night / all nighter / weekender: Munich, Nuremberg, Bamberg Frankfurt, Dresden, Leipzig, Mainz, Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Bremen to name just a few. There have been lots of british DJs over here for example: Butch, Soul Sam, Andy Dyson, Mick H, James Trouble, Dave Thorley, Dave Rimmer, John Weston, John Mills, Chris Anderton.... Guest malayka Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 The real question is would I go back? Well the answer is definitely yes!! Is any one planning to go this year? When, where and can I come? Well, I'd say the german scene has - as you probnably already noticed, some really good, quality weekenders, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Munich, Bamberg....but of course, there's much more going on... the german soulscene in general is so much younger than the english one, hence the crowd...it's not ment negative but: they are still able to move on the dancefloor...you don't have so many people standing around and talking about how good the record is which just has been played, therefore people who express that with dancing....hope you don't get me wrong.... if you ask me where you should go to...defo Bamberg...

Guest stromberg Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 I've edited the topic title to more accurately reflect the thread Cheers Nick aahh...I liked the title Most has been already said and there is not too much to add, but I'd say if you are going for a soul event in the first place(instead of visiting the country and do sight-seeing, but you probably don't need to do that when you already spent 11 years over here)the weekender option is probably the best, they all have a two music room policy and from early R'nB to current stuff, everything is covered, so there is something for everyone. But if you are going to visit a specific city, you will find that most of the bigger cities have a more or less regular event, most have already been mentioned. The weekenders all come highly recommended, each city/venue has something unique to it and you'll find a good and friendly crowd(usually 400 upwards), great beer at affordable prices and great music at every one. Hope to see and meet some soul-sourcers overhere this year There are quite a lot of germanz on here and I am sure they all will be helpful to all you folks thinking about making a trip over See you in Bamberg, Frankfurt, Hamburg or N¼rnberg! Best, Stefan
Marc Forrest Posted March 16, 2007 Posted March 16, 2007 Now I know John Buck ventured over to Berlin some years ago and I have heard that the initial reports on the night where a little "fluffed up" to say the least? The night was an almighty flop? Being the man who organized this in 1990 I must say you are right in some aspect..it really was not too succesfull...but not really a "flop"..I had 300 in on friday and about 250 in on saturday...not bad for the very first internional German Soulweekender BUT The hall was buzild to hold up to 2000 people On the other hand back in the days we organized monthly allnighters (again with Gary Spencer, carl fortnum and Jon Buck being amongst our Guest DJ`s) which had 1000 people in. This was Berlin 1987 to 1990/1.... And yes I still do the Hip City on a regular basis with the best international Rare Soul DJ`s one can imagine...next one will be in may 5th with Martin Walgenbach and Oguzahn Celik and the big 17th anniversary party with Butch on July 14th...feel free to check my myspace...

Try this for size https://www.soul-magic.de/playlists.html Just for the record as D¼sseldorf has not been mentioned......there are several soul does every weekend. Non of them strictly northern. PLEASE GIVE US THE REAL LINEUP. THIS MUST BE POSSIBLE HALF A WEEK BEFORE THE EVENT. Thought about to come over to the Weekender for a night...but not for some electronical/house music DJs. Ralf Hi ralf Ive been booked from day one but needed Dave Rimmer to sign autographs for me, so he's coming along with his pen. Prestatyn "Hardliners" Steve Hobbs, Lloyd Atril, Mick Farrer, Conrad Boole. I was on hand with stand by acts which are NOT required as everyone is coming. see you there reagrds Rob & karen Wigley Edited March 20, 2007 by Karen and Rob Wigley

I looked at that one and though WooHoooo It looks fabulous! Who's having the punk room? One last question, how far is Lubeck airport from the venue? Edited March 20, 2007 by ♫ Soulgirl ♫
Reg Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Thanks! I do fancy the Soul Shakers event in April but I'm having a baby the week before so I think I'll be otherwise engaged My husband has been suggesting a trip to Germany for ages now so the Hamburg weekender comes just at the right time
Dave Thorley Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 (edited) Thanks! I do fancy the Soul Shakers event in April but I'm having a baby the week before so I think I'll be otherwise engaged My husband has been suggesting a trip to Germany for ages now so the Hamburg weekender comes just at the right time Shame you can't make it, but clearly not the right time. But see you in Hamburg, it's going to be a great event. But for everyone else get the Bamberg Experience, as Butch calls it. 800 plus soul fans from all over europe. See the photo's further back in this tread. Edited March 20, 2007 by Dave Thorley
Guest malayka Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 Thanks! I do fancy the Soul Shakers event in April but I'm having a baby the week before so I think I'll be otherwise engaged My husband has been suggesting a trip to Germany for ages now so the Hamburg weekender comes just at the right time That's the only reason ( and a real good one!! ) I accept you not beeing there in April!!!!
Ralf Mehnert Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 to soulgirl: the punk royal room is long gone. marc forrest will sleep there with his girlfriend...by the way...dave rimmer will sleep in the erich honnecker room and john weston with angie in the honeymoon suite. don`t have a clue what they have for dave thorley and malayka.... to reg: you can book cheap flights from manchester with airberlin directly to hamburg-fuhlsb¼ttel airport (30 min by shuttle bus to St.Pauli/Mandarin Casino) or from london-stansted to hamburg-l¼beck with ryanair (l¼beck is around 60 miles away from hamburg...but there are shuttle busses from l¼beck airport to hamburg as well)

Rob Wigley Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 don't want to be difficult...BUT there are still some question marks...why did one of the djs tell me last weekend he is not going to dj there but is still on the list? why do people I know and trust tell me that some of the artists wont appear on stage because of certain issues? it just would be nice to get some light in the whole story.... I have had the DJ times and artist times e-mailed to me (as i think all the Djs have) and all the acts are in there with a time on stage. As I said ,I had acts on standby that are not now required. DJ line ups DO change especially where travel is involved. Really looking forward to this one and seeing the German lads who make the effort to come to Prestatyn on their home soil. Rob & Karen
Guest mirja m Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 Hello, no idea why, but Ralf Mehnert is spreading false rumours on a German Forum, too. He has tried on many occasions to get a ticket. First he claimed to be a winner of a tombola and after the office told him he would not get a ticket that way he said he was umemployed and could not afford a ticket so he wanted one for free. (Ralf is not unemployed, since he recently appeared in a Hamburg Newspaper due to his job) The promoters have signed contracts with all Live acts on the bill and have no reason to believe any of the acts are not coming. ROB. It is difficult to understand for people who do not deal with international live acts, that there a constant changes. In germany there hardly ever were live acts on weekenders, so it is new to everybody. we are very much looking forward to the weekend and hope everything runs smoothly. this is the first big one for us too, so we just hope everything will work out fine. there will be about 2000 people on site so we expect some nice parties..... best regards, Mirja. PS dearest ralf: in case you have any questions, we suggest to contact the office first and inform yourself before posting it on forums and spreading false info. PPS. no, you are still not the winner. ;-) +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is the confirmed line up... Baltic Soul Weekender 23. - 25. Ralf Mehnert Posted March 21, 2007 Posted March 21, 2007 mirja, nice posting. I never want to spread false rumours about your event. That`s the reason why I don`t write DJ X and live Act Y cancelled the Baltic Soul Weekender. I just asked a few questions, because I`d heard from four different friends that a few artists from the lineup will not come to the Weekender. ...and I`d never seriously tried to order any tickets, because I`d thought I have to work over the Weekender days. I got an email from one of your office girls a few weeks ago with an invitation for the event. It was obvious that this girl made a mistake, because I`d never ever contact you about any tickets. I`d asked her via email about winning into a newspaper competetion. It was just a joke. After her nice answer I know what I`d known before...I`m not winning anything. As a second joke I`d asked her about some free tickets, because I`m workless in the moment and my girlfiend is a strong smoker...so I can`t afford it. Don`t take me to serious...maybe my humour is a little too sick for this office girl. I`d no more contact to any of yours until these days. Meanwhile something changed at work..so I`ll have a free weekend and I thought to come with a friend for the saturday night. So I like to know what is expecting me at the coast. That`s all. Think it`s much easier to talk eye to eye but it`s a problem when you and Daniel haven`t been seen at any Soul event into the last 3 years. And I personally prefer other clubs then the posh ones Daniel DJ`ed regulary so it`s not easy to meet each other. So maybe we can talk about all this nonsens at the Hamburg Soul Weekender later this year. I set you and Daniel on the guest list.
