Soul Music and Social Change with Stuart Cosgrove and John Manship - Sat 28th October magazine cover

Join Stuart Cosgrove and John Manship for an afternoon of something a little different!

Stuart Cosgrove is the award-winning author of the ground-breaking Black Social History and soul music books ‘Detroit 67’, ‘Memphis 68’, and ‘Harlem 69’. Chairing the event is John Manship, highly respected DJ, collector, author, international soul music auction house owner, and leading authority on Northern Soul.

An acclaimed journalist and former editor of NME and The Face, Stuart joined Channel 4 in 1994, serving for eight years as Controller of Arts and Entertainment, and then as Head of Programmes (Nations and Regions). Thanks, but I'm from Norway, so it's a bit far 🙂 I'm reaaly interested in the topic (writing a book), so please see if it's possible to record in any way.

Hi everyone 😊

The space is set up and Stuart and John are well up for it, so a great afternoon is in store.

Event starts at 3pm, and museum doors open at 2.30pm for those who want to look around and get settled.

Waterstones will be downstairs in the exhibition space at the end of the event for those who are inspired and want to buy a book, and Stuart has kindly agreed to do a signing.

See you later

I proper enjoyed it. Both Stuart and John were funny, honest, and as you would expect, extremely knowledgeable. You never would have known it was the first time they had ever met in person, they were like longtime friends catching up, such brilliant chemistry.

Didn't focus too much on the books, had more of a northern soul feel, talking about Stuart's journey from soul boy to author, and all the twists and turns along the way. Stuart put John on the spot midway through with a live valuation session for some of his collection that he had brought with him, absolutely hilarious.

Great banter and brilliant stories from both made for a fabulous couple of hours. I can't thank them enough for being so candid, and for sharing so much with us all.

It was my Twitter post above  - it was a great afternoon and alongside some fantastic tales (Mary Wilson scandalous stories!) there was a lot of humour. Some of the best moments were John and Stuart reflecting on the strange situations record collecting had thrown them into. Some comedy, some poignant. So glad it’s been recorded- will bring a lot of enjoyment!
