Rugby Soul Club Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Colwyn Bay Pier All Nighter mid 70's ... anyone out there go! Used to attend on the scooter rallies in the 80's. Lovely venue and floor. About the time I realised the northern on rallies was a bit restricted, I think skying in the snow and 6 x 6 was played 4 times in one night.... It's been bought privately and restored, should be due for re-opening about now..... Would be nice to see how it's turned out... anyone let us know....
chrissie Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Colwyn Bay Pier All Nighter mid 70's ... anyone out there go! Probably, though don't remember much about North Wales in the 70s, got drunk in 1974 and didn't sober up until about 1978 so who knows I may of been . Remember going to see Souxie and the Banshees at the Colwyn Bay Dixie in about 1979 but think I had sobered up by then, well I hope so as I was driving QoFxx
Dickytwang Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 Colwyn Bay Pier All Nighter mid 70's ... anyone out there go! Yes I went to the pier, there was also a place called the friendship club or did I dream this! My memory is not what it used to be.
Barry Posted March 14, 2007 Posted March 14, 2007 (edited) I did the dayers in the early 80's. Did the BH ones used to follow the Friday Wigan Oldies session? As I'm sure I went to Wigan Friday, Wigan Saturday, Colwyn Bay Sunday the next thing I knew I woke up with a cat on me face in that 5.30am half light that you only get in a front room with the curtains drawn. I sat up, removed the cat....I was on a couch in an unfamiliar room, I looked round....there were six people that I didn't know on the floor in the bay window of a house that I had no re-collection of entering, playing 'The Game Of Life'. It was Tuesday, I was meant to be in work in Warrington on the Monday previous - and the killer, I was in Lincoln. Northern Soul ay??? Edited March 14, 2007 by Barry

Crumb Posted March 15, 2007 Posted March 15, 2007 Yes I went to the pier, there was also a place called the friendship club or did I dream this! My memory is not what it used to be. No, your memories ok, I used to go to the Friendship Club before the nighters. I've still got a badge somewhere, similar to the Wigan Oldies anniversary badge. I remember getting off the train one Friday night to be met by the Police informing us that the nighter was cancelled. Luckily they kept the Friendship club open till about 2. I think I had a better night that if the nighter had been on, but I was lucky enough to stay at a friends house, lots of others weren't so lucky & ended up kipping in shop doorways. I also went to alldayers at a venue in Arias Park or something like that. Sometime later I went to an Allnighter run by Chris Burton as part of a scooter run.

No your memory is fine, I went to the Friendship Club before the pier, my first all nighter and I remember it like it was yesterday. Glad to hear it's soon re-opening.
Guest Bearsoul Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 can't remember year but went to one, probably in the 80s though, i remember there was no heating on a freezing cold night and everyone dancing in their coats it was that bleedin cold, me and Alex McBride gave up and sat in the car outside with a bag of herb and got hammered then went back in and the world suddenly seemed a rosier place.

John Elias Posted March 18, 2007 Posted March 18, 2007 (edited) Yep the Colwyn bay pier pavilion was named Dixieland, went there as an alternative to Paynes or Winter gardems in Llandudno,we are talking early seventies, mixed bag of music, some northen some top twenty stuff and also live heavy bands for some strange reason. Loads of scrapping goin on! Went to have a look at the old place last year....dancefloor has bits of hardboard nailed over several holes, there is a large hole in the stained glass roof, totally f*cked in my opinion, very sad, still, happy memories! My first All Niter, was just 15 at the time, scared stiff at first, but absolutely hooked from then on and haven't looked back. Remember the Frenny club too, and the Riverboat rooms in Rhos-on-Sea. Also many soul nights at the Pier late 70's early 80's, All-dayers every New Years Day. Saw the Specials and other Two-Tone bands there 1980/81, great times!

QoFxx I know for certain it was Dixieland in 1973/74 - worked there a number of times with the North Wales Soul Club ( Gilbert Gillan and Robert Redhead ) Vaguely recall Jimmy James appearing along the coast about 5 times in a fortnight in Autumn 74 including my leaving do before I got exiled to Cyprus ! Remember Ginger and co doing spots as well as the Wigan names of the day - Searling - Russ, Sam etc... fond fond memories for the NW crowd in particular... always bloody cold to start though... in a very sorry state these days... the guy who owns it reportedly paid around £125k for it and wants to restore it - council won't cough up enough support and the repair bill is climbing with the tide and rust every year - last I heard its looking at the thick end of £3m.... shame.. would be good to give it one more go.. some pics from those days here www.soulbeat.co.uk - Gallery section Edited April 3, 2007 by NiteOwl

There were also a few good dayers held at the Bangor Technical college (still have the posters) - DJ's were Brian Rae, Dave Evison, Soul Sam, Russ, local lads - Les, Royston, John Bunny, Graham, Gaz and Benny etc...Manys a time we would do Wigan Oldies on the Friday - Back to Bangor Castle for a dayer - then the coach /train back to Wigan Saturday... Where did we get the energy?? The Venue in Rhyl was the Queens Hotel If I remember correctly - not to be confused with the Queens Hotel on the Hill in Colwyn Bay where one or two Soul nights ran... not far from the hotel 70 degrees up the road where we went to 1 or 2 as well ... Is it me or was there lots more going on back then?? Also remember the soul crowd taking over the basement at Plas Coch nightclub a few times too - where Jimmy James & The Vagabonds, The Real Thing and others appreared... Gilbert Gillan in the main room was a closet soulie i reckon.. Anyone remember the record shop at the bottom end of Bangor high st..... bought a few goodies from there.... There were also a few good dayers held at the Bangor Technical college (still have the posters)i reckon.. Anyone remember the record shop at the bottom end of Bangor high st..... bought a few goodies from there.... I was at Bangor Tech doing a pre nursing course and fancied a soulie called Will who was doing some kind of BBC type course and ran into him a few years later at wigan casino.Remember dancing to Shame at Plas coch (excuse spelling), didnt they also have do's down by teh pier in Bangor??? and happy times listening to three before eight in the common room ................... ahh when I was young Doris aka Sue
NiteOwl Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Sue, the only venues I remember in Bangor itself (apart from the Castle & Tech) were the Old Library Hall behind the main city post office, and the Community centre at the lower (pier) end of town, close to Kwik save and John Owen cycle shop... They were occassional Soul nights - I know that John Bunny & Graham Thomas ran the Library ones - but don't remember who did the community centre ones.... As for Wil... the name rings a bell but can't place a face...... Was hoping someone on here may remember John Leach from Bangor - emigrated to Australia I think - he was a Soulie from the area about that time... always wondered how he got on in OZ and if he's picked it back up again - was a great dancer.... Nostalgia - Nostalgia...........

Kazb Posted May 13, 2007 Posted May 13, 2007 Mark, who were Shaun Gibbons and Marc Farley? don't sound familiar, still on the scene? Shaun Gibbons used to promote Morcambe Pier Niters, early 80's.
Guest Netspeaky Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 (edited) Shaun Gibbons used to promote Morcambe Pier Niters, early 80's.Shaun was promoting Morecambe and Colwyn Bay, although he used to leave the Bay about 3am and I would then end up dealing with the remaining hours. From my helping Shaun run the Bay niters I ended up as one of the regular DJ's in the oldies room in Morecambe Pier Alnighters. I later DJ'd at the Carlton Allnighters in Morecambe while Shawn run one in competition in Morecambe which effectively kill both nighters. The reason the Bay nighters finished was that Shawn owed the owner (Chris WIlliams) who run CJ's in Rhyl at the time money for the hire. I haven't seen Shawn for many years, but I believe he still lives in the Morecambe area. Mark Farley is still around I'm sure I've seen his name mentioned on SS. Edited May 14, 2007 by Netspeaky

Guest Posted May 14, 2007 Posted May 14, 2007 I also had the pleasure of attending the All Nighters on Colwyn Bay Pier with the lads that used to hang out at the Bridge Club (now demolished) and the Palace (now closed) in Rhyl. Does anybody remember any of the following people who also used to attend, Snap, Ganger, Alan Brown, Colin Williams, Spider, Ste Burn, Martin Lappin, Geoff Bamber, Andy Barlow, Penny & Joanne Holloway, Liz Burn, Les Jones, Billy Jones, Simon Farrell, Howard Farrell, where are they now. I remember one particular night when about eight of us had to get a lift home in the back of Simon Farrell Pie Delivery Van, as you can imagine fun and games on the way home with yesterdays pies entow. I also remember a younger netspeaky who prided himself on never ever paying more than 50 pence for any record in his collection (sorry), he promises me this is still the case today ?
