Apologies if done before, but why do so many records on black ABC, USA, have gold paint dabbed on them? I assume it was some kind of method to denote old stock and cut out sales tax? But where, by who, I've come across loads over the years.

I think the question has been asked/responded to previously on SS. Worth doing again though; I only mention it as some previous contributors may not be around anymore, and a previous search might have more answers/theories.

Mods?

I would have thought the drill hole was the easier way to identify deletions for no return , gold paint splodge on a record seems to be a laborious way to do it even on few records never mind thousands.
