Geeselad
Apologies if done before, but why do so many records on black ABC, USA, have gold paint dabbed on them? I assume it was some kind of method to denote old stock and cut out sales tax? But where, by who, I've come across loads over the years. 1 Link to comment Social source share
Popular Post Tlscapital
Likely at ABC these were pressed in such great quantities at one time (just like Verve and M-G-M at one time) that they had overstocks of their own (not even gone to the record store's racks) that at ABC (only seen ABC's & Co. with those) instead of 'hole drill' them they marked them with such gold paint to offer them on 'sales' and never to be refunded if ever... Louise
Perhaps ABC had a lot of spare Gold paint ? 1 Link to comment Social source share
Soulfulsolutions
Relatively common thing to see on ABC and any ABC subsidiaries, gotta say tho I can't remember seeing the gold paint on any white demo, always and maybe solely applied to stock copies on these labels. 2 Link to comment Social source share
Peter99
I think the question has been asked/responded to previously on SS. Worth doing again though; I only mention it as some previous contributors may not be around anymore, and a previous search might have more answers/theories. Mods? Shinehead
I would have thought the drill hole was the easier way to identify deletions for no return , gold paint splodge on a record seems to be a laborious way to do it even on few records never mind thousands.
