If knowledgeable people talk about modern art, they are generally referring to 20th century artworks. We live in a post modern age, personally I'd use contemporary to describe current soul music.

More "rare groove" rather than "modern" perhaps? - I used to be the lucky owner of this then swapped it for it think Bobby Thurston Sweetest piece of the Pie LP (the reissue!!!!!) - Was young and foolish, must have been absolutely nuts but at the time, this record was just a record to me. Oh well!!

Don't know about Modern classics but these 45s are from the 80s and 90s and rather good.

We The People - Ain't No Way / Magnetic South Records, made big waves quite recently, and it's brilliant!!  right up my street, anybody got one for sale?  still dont have a copy....

Oaxaca - Stop Your Crying, is very nice, on MARIPOSA Records, Ms. Victoria Barnes - Never Too Late, Morris - Can we melt the Ice, and Mojoba - I Know, all classics that dont turn up much.. 

This is a good one for this thread...no idea if they are the same bunch as the 'Detroit Leaning' on IPS,  I posted earlier, don't sound like it.. there is another grouop called 'Exit' on JAY Records, with 'Life is what you make it again', again dont sound the same, but they maybe.. anybody know?

I never quite got the buzz around this record when it starting getting plays? - but know it's a loved record but i won't upset anyone as I'm sure nobody actually, has it? - or do they?, yes super-duper rare!

The truth is, there are loads of these 45s out there, they sound real nice when you first hear them, for the most part, they are rare, but ultimately, uninspiring...  that 'Exit' Ive posted above, kinda the same really? 

Movin on, there was another 45 that got action not that long ago, The Numbers - Got To Pull Away on Rolashed, semi rare 45, but my god it's a good one.

I've gone lolly about this reciently...rare on the Noodle label 45. This cover they used isnt wrong, but it's spelt 'The Tropics' on the 45...

Don't want to shoulder in too much, but what do folks think of this one?

early 7ts track, its goes for money, and is I guess a rare one... think the writer had a bag of marbles in his pocket when he wrote it...

Sam played me this about 20 years ago , he'd just got it off Andy Dyson for £100 i think. Finally in demand so i'm guessing £5-600 , always loved it & play it occasionally

Err 3.9K LOL, mentioned before, always been a tough one, but as a few members on here have said recently "testing the water" with those in demand records ie chancers - but saying that I've not seen another for sale for a good few years though. B sides great too - i won't be buying one🙄

Yep, i gave up, forgotten that one - i see they haven't found a 200 box count since i gave up looking then - Sometimes with these records i wonder if they ever even got a release? i know of nobody who has this or ever seen it - Butch probably has it though LOL

Hey Steve, hope you are well.  I'm referring to collectors, not soul nights, I don't go to events any longer. I could not tell you anything about any 'Scene' today.  But John Manship had a copy on Auction a while back, maybe a 8-9 months ago, something like that, about the same time I read that 'The Numbers - Got To Pull Away' was getting spins, and I know that as it 'We The People' was new to quite a few, me included, it made a stir... lot of folks after it, any copies on Discogs etc, they all sold pretty immediately..

I still need a copy 😞

It's great to see collectors and dj's take on this subject, but in reality the halcyon days of the rare modern soul scene (given most of the tracks that have been mentioned) was between 1980 and 88, for the simple fact most of the tracks mentioned did at the time sound relatively modern due to being recent releases or a couple of years old ie Curtis Anderson and Ronnie Barns were not a million miles away from new releases being played in the better end clubs around Londons north circular,it was a subculture of club culture. Even back then the people I knew who were really on it never classed Melvin Moore or Earl white junior modern, even back then they sounded dated, I still have both and are fantastic records, but had either got 1975 written on the label I doubt too many would have questioned it. The term Modern Soul should have been well and truly been dumped for these releases in and around the early nineties as record productions changed and in turn call them for what they infact are, which is rare 80s. There have also been too many records on this thread made well before the term modern soul was to my knowledge ever used! I mean surely Sammy lee and the Nialations are just seventies dancers, I have the Sammy Lee 45,supposed to be from 78, sounds more like 71 to me, that's not modern. For example a proper modern soul record is Anthony David feat Kiesha Jackson 'Lady', came out last year ON CD so it sounds modern!. Back then there were also a few tracks played that only appeared on 12" , many of these have remained elusive like the Purple Gang, Bachelor, James King, Pike, Juice on Outlet the list goes on. There have been hundreds of 45's which failed to make it back then or had yet to be found, many of similar rarity and quality of most mentioned above. There seems to be several small fractured scenes for this output now, So sadly many will get little attention. Has Larome Baker, Glenda Mcloed,Raj, Brothers Gilmore,SPG had a mention?. One record I must mention that I had purchased in the early 90's was Darrell Johnson's 'Days gone past' on DTJ productions, it actually came out in 1980, such a great production for the period, way ahead of it's time. Sorry about the terminology rant, unable to contain myself. By the way Steve I used your post to thank you for excellent work that is ALL PLATINUM the making of a sound. For a group harmony fan like miself a real treat. Never knew Jay player was in the Optamistics, every day's a school day. Oh, Jay player on 45 is no easy piece in 2024.

Don't think many would believe what we used to play in the Black Swan all those years ago Andy. 

I remember playing Larom Baker. King Moses. Fluorescent Smogg and Mark Iv on Brite lite all in a row. 

Funny i put King Moses up for sale for £150 in Echoes and never had one phone call. 

Eventually i rang Clarkie and he reluctantly took it.

I have a Russ's records list from around 1977 which lists this... Wish I had bought then... Bought much later for 20x that price and since sold on. Another one I wish I had not sold.

The "7 Miles Per Hour Band" is a one Richard Searling used to play in the 80's. I bought a 7" 45rpm copy then from John Anderson at Soul Bowl. Turned out to be a rare record and one that's hardly ever seen for sale.

The 45rpm is a shorter time than this sound clip I found on you tube.

To be fair Chris even the thickest of skined collector was reluctant to spend a shed load of cash on most titles like that for the simple fact most of us thought in the end they would slowly start to drift over from the states and end up being a fiver as most were relatively knew, even after the best part of forty years you could probably fit all the known copies of those titles you mention ever found in a bucket and still have room for your shoes! but the thing is if you wanted to hear it you had three options, buy it, turn up, or scrounge a hissy cassette off ya mate! , no youtube mixcloud discogs spotify re-issue etc. Everybody's an expert now without going out of the front door. Good times back then for sure and credit to Poke, Sam Arthur, Robin, Richard etc for the inspiration.

I don't know how rare/hard this one is, I never heard it played by many DJ's, but, what I do know for sure, (as a former dancer), is that it is a stonker of a dance record. 🤩 🤩

Sweet Pearl is a lovely track Malc. 

My memory seems to recall some nice tracks by a group Black Pearl, but I could be mistaken there.
