"Hey Baby!"  by The Ban-Lons. Not really a "Cover", as it wasn't out yet long after Bruce Chanel's version had stopped selling - it WAS however, a "remake".

"Norwegian Wood" by Hugh Masekela

"Grazing In The Grass" by Hugh Masekela

"Cathy's Clown" by The Ideals

"Hey Everybody" by Ramona King. - original by Henry Alston

There are quite a number of 'covers' that I like.

Not too many decent Beatle's songs covers on the soul side but I do like E,W&F's attempt + Syretta's effort too. For me, Jose Feliciano was at his best on covers -- his take on "Golden Lady" is just sublime.

One song that never really did it for me was "Pony Time" -- that certainly inspired quite a few cover versions in very quick succession after Don Covay's group's original effort ...

Can't remember the artist but always liked the female version of ' got to get you into my life' on scepter, if I remember correctly.

And this

The best version for me

Hi Robb,  I thought "Grazing in the Grass" by Hugh Masekela was the original?

yes

" Till There Was You " by the Beatles was also a cover version of an old 1950 recording by Meredith Willson & his Orchestra & Eileen Wilson ( on vocals ) titled " Till I Met You , on Decca , the only difference is the wording .

But can't find the other , unreleased shrine recording " I Wanna Hold Your Hand " , I know people might squirm but there have been quite a few of the Beatles ( Lennon & McCartney) tunes covered my favourite is, JJ Barnes , Day Tripper

Nobody has yet mentioned any instrumentals , so here's one and by far the superior version,,

Eddie Bishop ,Call Me , written by Tony Hatch , first sung by Petula Clark , and then probably Tony Hatch and his good lady Jackie Trent .

Eric Mercury - Take me girl I'm ready is another that springs to mind.

Nice, new to me, second time in two days on this thread that someones posted a different version of a Jr Walker track which made me think how easy we forget the obvious ones as no one though i could have missed it posted Jr's What Does it Take on the best intro thread. Take Me has been a long time favourite of mine, nice raspy vocal on this version. Everytime I play Take Me I wish Jr's sax playing went on a little longer before the girls start singing, that Sax hits me right to the pit of my stomach.

Some nice covers on here, thanks

This one, love it to bits.

Brings something else to the OG, I think her voice "matches" the song and there's quite a tasty piano solo too.

In my humble opinion, two well worth revisiting:

Soul related; Four Tops - Climb every mountain.

Non soul related; Gerry and the Pacemakers - You'll never walk alone.

Happy New Year all,  kev

Alan Price had good taste in music. He liked his soul, so the Alan Price Set's initial four UK singles included his covers of "Any Day Now", "I Put A Spell On You" & "Yours Until Tomorrow". While an EP from the group released in France during  the same time period featured "Barefootin", "Have Mercy" & "Getting Mighty Crowded".

Originals by Rose Royce and Little Jimmy Gandy- two of my favourite covers. The Lovelites cut features Deniece Williams as lead.

During my years on the house scene there were loads of covers of the underground disco records that preceded house, most were pointless and inferior but occasionally one shone through

Written by Curtis Mayfield, performed by Gene Chandler / Curtis Mayfield / Baby Huey - Hard Times not sure which ones the cover though I personally prefer the Baby Huey rendition.
